Anytime anybody here would like to come chat in real time, please feel free to drop by SF Lit (DelphiForums) on a Wednesday or SFF Net on a Thursday. Here's the info:
DelphiForums' SF Literature
Wednesday Night Irregulars
10pm Eastern till we all keel over
Go to www.sflit.com and
click on Chat Rooms, then Wednesday Night Irregulars.
SFF Net IRC
Blood Groove, my regular Thursday-night hosted chat
(Started as a horror-fiction chat--thus the name; now a general-interest chat)
11pm Eastern till I keel over, but irc.sff.net is almost always populated
Point an IRC client at irc.sff.net and /join #lobby
You can also try /join #eidenmyr ... I'll start keeping a channel open with
that name, just for you guys
IRC clients I recommend: Trillian, mIRC, and ircle
Help getting to SFF Net IRC: http://www.sff.net/help/chat/
I would be tickled pink to see anyone from here over there! Both places are completely friendly, if sometimes a bit dauntingly chatty. If you're overwhelmed, just message me on the side:
In an SF Lit chatroom: Highlight my username (MCGARRY) in the right-hand menu, type a message in the text bar at the bottom, then click PRIVATE MESSAGE in the lower right-hand menu
In a SFF Net chatroom: /msg Terry Type your message here [in the text-input bar]

Sounds like you fall into the category of
Night Owl
Terry....
If I'm up late one of those nights, I may bop
on in.

11pm Eastern, that's what? 7pm here? I'm still not of work yet for a couple hours. Maybe on my day off I'll see about borrowing a comp and chatting tho'. :)
Posted by Terry on 8/23/2002, 6:25 pm , in reply to "Re: Online chats"
Yeah, the time difference can be weird. But some nights I'm in there till the wee hours, and we get a good crowd of West Coasters.
I've been keeping the channel #eidenmyr open on irc.sff.net on Thursdays as long as I'm in there.

I stopped in last week, but Terry had turned in early. Sorry to have missed you, Terry. A real interesting room full of brainiacs, and I enjoyed meeting them.
Thanks for suggesting Trillian! Worked like a charm on my old Civil War Surplus (400MHz)computer, which, by the way, I replaced this week with 1.8GHz of macho machine. Catering to the quirks of the old one finally surpassed my PC technical abilities.
Looking forward to chatting with y'all sometime.

I'm so glad you stopped by, Karin! And I'm sorry I missed you. I had a big crush of work that week and had to be responsible and not stay up late chatting. Last week I was at the World Science Fiction convention (got back this evening) and didn't manage to stop in. But I'll be there again regularly for the foreseeable future.
Very pleased that you like Trillian and the SFF Net IRC denizens!

It's beautiful!
You should be able to bring it up in this window by clicking here.
In the framed part of this site, you can also go to The Codices and click on "The Binder's Road" in the left-hand menu, for the cover art and jacket copy. (Ordering information is there, too, although the book won't be available for preorder for a bit.)
I am so pleased with Gary Ruddell's art!
Posted by Karin on 9/8/2002, 10:48 pm , in reply to "Cover art, The Binder's Road"
Beautiful and haunting! Much better than those covers that portray heroes doing daring deeds of derring do (heroines safely behind them), or wizards dramatically casting (That wand really makes the rounds).
Wonderful, skillful execution by Gary Ruddell, as well.
I'm eagerly looking forward to reading this. (Snuck a peek at the jacket notes)
And now that "Illumination" is out in paperback, I know what all my fantasy-reading friends are getting for the holidays this winter ... that is, if I haven't talked them into reading it, yet.
Thanks for sharing that, Terry!

Wow! It's beautiful. So what color is the book without the dj? I've taken to making a mural of all my dj's because I like the look of the books better without them on my shelves. It gives my library a unique rustic look.
Can't wait for the book...can't wait for your visit...march is gonna be so cool!

Beautiful!
Am keeping the candle burning for you Terry.

Thanks, juan! And beautiful colors as always. ;)
I got your email and responded, BTW, but I got a bounce message. Lately I've been getting weird bounce messages even when email goes through, so I'm not even sure my reply didn't make it. I'll try again. But just so you know. Great icon, and I appreciate!!
Posted by juan on 10/13/2002, 9:23 pm , in reply to "Re: Cover art, The Binder's Road"
Just as a by the way, it did not make it.
Are you gonna give out some notice of a release
date, so I reread Illumination?
Posted by Terry on 10/18/2002, 11:14 am , in reply to "Re: Cover art, The Binder's Road"
The release date is March 2003. I don't have a ship date yet, but the hardcovers are usually in stores sometime in the month before the release date, so it might even be available in February. Hope so!
The message just thanked you profusely for the icon. I still have to figure out how to make it available here, but it is way cool! Thanks again!
Posted by Terry on 9/15/2002, 4:18 pm , in reply to "Re: Cover art, The Binder's Road"
I love the mural idea, Angi-Kate. That's excellent.
I wish I knew what color the cloth binding of the book will be, but I don't. I suspect it'll be the same as Illumination's, but maybe with a different hue of foil stamping. That's my guess.
Given how they've matched the style of the dust jackets, I suspect the bindings will also match nicely. No fears there. :)
Posted by Terry on 9/15/2002, 4:16 pm , in reply to "Re: Cover art, The Binder's Road"
I'm so glad you like it, Karin! And so glad you're thinking of giving Illumination as a gift to friends. Great news!

What's everybody up to this Harvestmid?
Posted by Terry on 10/15/2002, 12:05 am , in reply to "Squash? Turnips?"
Your subject header made me hungry, but then I was too busy smiling that you remembered the word "harvestmid." :) :) :)
I put a big pumpkin out on the front steps.
I bought a cool stuffed skeleton to hang from the deck, but it looks so cute belted in to the front seat of the car that it's been sitting there since I got it. I have yet to locate the box with the talking skull, but I will.
The tomatoes are done in, and it's time to clear the plants away. I've been refilling the bird feeders more often now that the weather's getting colder. Sunflower seeds and thistle are a big hit, but the peanut-butter suet is an experiment best not repeated.

Burning so many candles I forget which ends are lit. School sucks. I'm taking a study break before I go to sleepy sleep. Glad the board isn't dead. What's going on with you this harvestmid, Karen?
Posted by Angi-Kate on 10/17/2002, 2:21 am , in reply to "Re: Squash? Turnips?"
Oops, sorry. I should have spelled your name KARIN instead of Karen. Sorry. :(
Posted by Karin on 10/20/2002, 6:36 pm , in reply to "Re: Squash? Turnips?"
Thanks for noticing, Angi-Kate. I'm so used to it after 40 years, you really don't have to worry. My surname is misspellable, too, but I'm happy as long as the bank cashes the check!
The tourists are coming back to Key West. We have our biggest event of the year, Fantasy Fest, next weekend, so I've been working a lot. Also been getting poked an prodded by doctors brandishing devices (Looks like I'm fine), so not much time on the boat.
Posted by Terry on 10/21/2002, 7:04 pm , in reply to "Re: Squash? Turnips?"
I'm glad it looks like you're fine! I don't like the sound of brandishings and devices.
Your boat season must be longer down there than up here, yes? So there's still time to get out there and enjoy?
Fantasy Fest sounds great!
Posted by Karin on 10/24/2002, 10:51 pm , in reply to "Re: Squash? Turnips?"
Ya, I need a bit of surgery, but nothing scary. I'll just be uncomfortable for a while after it's done.
I'll post links to the Fantasy Fest photos I find when they come in.
I'm going to try inserting an image, here, of why boating is year-round where I live.

Posted by Terry on 10/26/2002, 4:28 pm , in reply to "Re: Squash? Turnips?"
Wow. Yes. Definitely, year-round boating. What an awesome place to live!
I hope the surgery and your recovery happen as quickly as possible and get you back out on the water. Doesn't sound too severe--that's a relief--but I'll be sending good thoughts your way.
Posted by Angi-Kate on 11/5/2002, 11:48 am , in reply to "Re: Squash? Turnips?"
Just read the message about your surgery. *HUGS* (very nice gentle ones) I hope you're feeling better soon!

Added a quizlet selector thingie to the site today, "Which Illumination character are you?" Have fun!
Posted by Angi-Kate on 10/17/2002, 2:16 am , in reply to "Quizzes/selectors"
Awe, man! I tested out as Heff. Okay, so I half expected it. Kewl new quiz. I was a wordsmith in the other one. :)
Posted by Terry on 10/17/2002, 1:15 pm , in reply to "Re: Quizzes/selectors"
Cool! Heff is the sweetest and most decent character. Nice people come out Heff. :)
The old SelectSmart profiler was a mishmash, because some questions were about magecraft but some were really about characters, or whether you're a seeker or a fighter. The new mage profiler is a little more focused (I hope!).
Posted by Terry on 10/17/2002, 1:18 pm , in reply to "Quizzes/selectors"
I put up another one today, "What kind of mage would you be?"
I was going nuts with the term "quiz," which everyone uses for these things but didn't seem right to me. A friend gave me the right word--"profiler"! Yay.
Let me know how they're working.
Posted by Karin on 10/20/2002, 6:55 pm , in reply to "Quizzes/selectors"
I'm Heff, too. Maybe it's a bug, because I'm not THAT nice.
Karin Wordsmith
Posted by Terry on 10/21/2002, 7:05 pm , in reply to "Re: Quizzes/selectors"
Zounds! I will take a look and see if maybe it's skewed toward Heff in some way I didn't notice. No one whose name looks so perfect with "Wordsmith" after it should be anything but.
Posted by juan on 10/21/2002, 10:24 pm , in reply to "Quizzes/selectors"
Golly, I ended up Torin, when I took it.
Posted by Terry on 10/22/2002, 12:32 pm , in reply to "Re: Quizzes/selectors"
Neat, Juan!
Posted by Karin on 10/24/2002, 10:55 pm , in reply to "Re: Quizzes/selectors"
Gotta love you dangerous guys!
Posted by Angi-Kate on 11/5/2002, 11:46 am , in reply to "Re: Quizzes/selectors"
Too, cool. I wish I would have gotten Torin, but I guess I'm not much of a revolutionary. :)
Posted by Melissa Mead on 11/3/2002, 9:52 pm , in reply to "Quizzes/selectors"
LOL! I'm a wordsmith-WHY aren't I surprised? ;)

Blessings of Samhain and Happy New Year to all here!
Posted by Karin on 11/13/2002, 6:18 pm , in reply to "Celtic New Year"
Why did I think the Winter Solstice was Samhain?
Posted by Terry on 11/19/2002, 12:00 am , in reply to "Re: Celtic New Year"
I dunno! If you lived way in the north (like, more north than here, which is New York), it might be the association between that time of year and winter coming on. Maybe it's just the feeling that Samhain is the end of the warm months and the beginning of the cold?
Posted by Karin on 11/20/2002, 6:18 pm , in reply to "Re: Celtic New Year"
I think someone once said the date for Christmas was chosen to replace the Samhain rituals, and it stuck in my head. So I keep thinking Samhain is the name for the long night. Sort of like when I mislearned the spelling of a word in elementary school, and still spell it wrong today even though I've been corrected, corrected, and corrected.
Posted by Terry on 11/21/2002, 11:51 pm , in reply to "Re: Celtic New Year"
Yup, sometimes things like that just stick and can't be unstuck. And I think it actually makes more intuitive sense for a holiday like Samhain (or All Hallows' Eve) to be on the longest night of the year.
Posted by Terry on 11/28/2002, 10:22 am
I hope you're all having a wonderful holiday, gettings lots of good stuff to eat (but not too much! {g}), and enjoying the company of family and friends.

Posted by Angi-Kate on 11/28/2002, 9:38 pm , in reply to "Happy Thanksgiving!"
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! I finished one dinner with my family and am about to embark on my second dinner at my fiance's family's house. I'm gonna gain all my weight back this holiday, but I don't care! :)
Posted by Karin on 11/29/2002, 10:13 pm , in reply to "Re: Happy Thanksgiving!"
Happy Thanksgiving, all. I enjoy all that cooking from scratch and eating from table, but I'm too pooped to care how much I overindulged.
Hope everybody had a great time!
Posted by Terry on 11/30/2002, 6:08 pm , in reply to "Re: Happy Thanksgiving!"
It felt great to overindulge. I haven't had mashed potatoes since March, when I started eating low-carb. Mmmmmm! Heaven! And the biscuits...don't even get me started on the biscuits...
But most blessings aren't food-related, and I've been counting them a lot over the past few days.
Glad you both had a good holiday!
Posted by juan on 12/5/2002, 10:09 pm , in reply to "Re: Happy Thanksgiving!"
Yea, just great to see friends I hadn't seen in a looooong time. But, you
just can't beat Pecan Pie.
Posted by Terry on 12/7/2002, 8:09 pm , in reply to "Re: Happy Thanksgiving!"
Hey, juan, good to see your phosphors!
We were just talking here about how long it's been since we had pecan pie. Mmmmmmmmmmmm....
Posted by juan on 12/8/2002, 10:03 pm , in reply to "Re: Happy Thanksgiving!"
You haven't had any Peecan Pie until you've had
some
baked down South.
Posted by Terry on 12/9/2002, 10:58 pm , in reply to "Re: Happy Thanksgiving!"
Ah-hah! I don't think I've had any baked down South. I had grits in the South, and jambalaya, and other stuff considered regional, but next time I'm down there I'll make sure to sample the pie.
Posted by shadowcat on 12/9/2002, 1:49 pm , in reply to "Happy Thanksgiving!"
Or as a sometimes friend put it (and after cogitation, I Agreed) try NOT to get as stuffed as the Turkey WAS!!
Posted by Terry on 12/11/2002, 8:53 am , in reply to "Re: Happy Thanksgiving!"
Hi, shadowcat! Good to see you here.
I'm smiling because in Cockney jargon, at least among the characters on the show EastEnders, "Get stuffed!" means "Go to hell!" {g}
