Where's Terry?
Posted by Karin on 3/6/2003, 11:46 pm

So, any whirlwind signing tours in the works?

Re: Where's Terry?
Posted by Terry on 3/7/2003, 10:25 am, in reply to "Where's Terry?"

Thank the good spirits, no signing tour! The horror! I get to stay home and write TRIAD instead. :)

But I'll be visiting at Auntie's Books (Spokane, WA) in April, and doing a bunch of SF conventions, and continuing to talk at schools and libraries and SF clubs. I just had a great visit with the Science Fiction Association of Bergen County (New Jersey). That's the sort of event I love doing--hanging out with people and talking about books. Signings for their own sake--feh. So far I've avoided them with a fair amount of success!

It occurs to me that I've never done a convention in Florida. (A regional con. I won't count Worldcon.) Little Rock, Arkansas, in May is the deepest south I have tentatively planned right now for this year. There's an IAFA conference in Fort Lauderdale in February--maybe I'll finally make it to that next year!

LOL! I just checked that International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts link and I see that the FL conference is in March (not Feb) and, in fact, is coming up in a couple of weeks! But it's opposite Lunacon, my local New York convention, which must be why I ruled it out for this year.

Too bad! With all the snow (and torrential freezing rain, and biblical hailstorms) we've been getting lately, Florida would be sooooo nice...count your blessings, you folk down there! {g} (I'll eat those words in hurricane season.) ----------------

I just finished reading illumination and i have some questions.
Posted by Smile Queen on 4/2/2003, 11:37 am

Hello all,

This board is awesome I can't believe that I found something like it.

As my subject says I have just finished Illumination and now i have some questions.

* Some of the chapter headings are tile stone like things. I noticed that there are nine different designs and three sets of three that are similar. Does each mage on the Ennead have their own sign?

I cant remember my other question at the moment but I will get back to you.

BTW I would like to say that I truely enjoyed the Book and cant wait to get ahold of the Binders Road. OH and if you guys are looking for something else to read try The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks. There are MANY others that come after the Sword and they get better as you kep reading.

Welcome to the board, SQ.

I expect Terry will be along shortly to answer your question, so keep checking back. I have an idea about the system, but am not sure enough to venture an answer.

I'm presently reading the tenth Wheel of Time book, and am frankly bored silly. I keep reading them, then promising I won't read the next one, but when the next one comes out... Oh, well, I've spent weeks reading the previous ones. In for a penny, in for a pound, I guess.

I could keep reading Thieves World books ad infinitum , though.

Thanks for the warning, I'll be wary at work.

Re: Tiles

If you thought those were cool, pay attention to the symbols at the beginning of the chapters in TBR.

Hi, Smile Queen! Sorry I took a few days to see your post. When I check every day it's quiet, and when I get busy and don't check, things happen! It's like washing your car so it will rain. :)

I am so happy that you found Illumination and read it and enjoyed it enough to come find this board and ask questions! Yay!

SPOILER ALERT--Not a major one, but this answer will give something away to anyone who hasn't read Illumination:

You nailed it, SQ (so cool!): Each mage on the Ennead does have her or his own sign. The signs are runic symbols--they're invented for these books, but they look a little like Norse runes. Each one stands for a kind of tree, as well as the sound of the name of that tree.

In the chapters from the point of view of just one Ennead member, there's one rune at the beginning of the chapter. When we get into the head of more than one Ennead member in the chapter, there's more than one rune at the beginning. It's like a code to tell you who's in the chapter.

The Ennead sections start out as singles, so you get to know them individually. Then they're from three points of view, then six, and they culminate at nine for the big casting they do toward the end of the book. The nine runes at the top are meant to start looking as though they spell a word at that point, which in a way they do. Then there are six, then three, and finally we end up with just one again--and it's the same one as the very first one (that section is from the same character's point of view as the first one, THORN, at the start of the book).

I hope that makes some sense! There's more about that runic "alphabet" in The Binder's Road, and I've been working on a Webpage about the Eiden Myr ancient languages and writing systems. There's a placeholder for it here, as part of the compendium.

Hope that helps and isn't too much of an infodump! If you remember the other questions, fire away!

Terry

Hey, folks! I'm off to Seattle tomorrow and Spokane on Saturday, where I will actually see at least one of you in person, but I just felt like wishing everyone a happy spring. The weather we're having here, after an insanely changeable first quarter of the year, is sublimely divine.

Hope all's well with everyone!

Happy Birthday! Congratulations on your purchase and good luck with your school reading. I never had to read Flowers for Algernon, mainly because I weasled my way out of my senior required reading by changing schools. The movie was supposed to be really good, though. Enjoy it while you can, I'm at the point where I have to read a novel a week for my classes. "Gorilla, My Love" is supposed to be finished by Tuesday for a test and I have yet to pick up the book. My senior class had to write this big paper on Flowers for Algernon or else they would not graduate, and the english teacher was insistant on that point. Hopefully, your reading is only for a test and then you get to move on to SummerTime. How long until your classes are out? And what is "The Order War"?

You had to read Flowers for Algernon in your Senoir class? wow sorry but we are reading it as a freshmen. Good Luck with your book, I would get hopping!

We get out on June 10th it seems soooo far away and i can't wait!

The Order War is a book by L.E. Modesitt Jr. its part of the Fantasy/ sci fi serise The Magic of Reculce. They are really good books once yu get into them and I recommend them!

Talk to you all later!

Posted by Angi-Kate on 5/13/2003, 6:47 pm, in reply to "Re: I finally got a copy of the Binders Road!!"

No, I would have had to read Flowers for Algernon my senior year of HS if I had not skipped my senior year at that HS and took my first year of college instead. It is kind of funny that you brought up L.E. MJodesitt Jr.'s Magic of Recluse series, and it comments on my stupidity because I referenced the series in a paper that I just turned in for a class (21 pages, I'm so proud!)and I've never read the books. They are on my To-Read list, though, and now that there is someone else who likes them, I'm becoming more intrigued. The paper was on villains and how perspecitve is a key element in deciding who the villain is, so Modesitt's plotline seemed to fit into the point I was trying to make. Anyway, off on a tangent. I hope you do well with Flowers for Algernon. Summer vacation is just around the corner!

How did you find out about the specifics of the Recluce Books and not read them? Still they are a great example that perspecive is a lot. What Class are you taking that you learn about that kind of thing? I can't wait untill Summer Vacation!

Posted by Angi-Kate on 5/15/2003, 11:05 pm, in reply to "Re: I finally got a copy of the Binders Road!!"

I learned about the Magic of Recluse through a co-worker at the bookstore. The class I'm taking that I used it for was my Creative Writing 340: Form and Theory of Fiction. We just got the papers back today and I passed! WooHoo! Only one more major paper left for that class, but I haven't been able to write anything except emails and sort internet messages for the past two weeks. I've got two other teachers upset with me about this, but I can't seem to write what they want now that I've squeezed out this last one. Maybe its school-fever.

Angi-Kate, where are you stuck in your paper-writing? Maybe we can all brainstorm and bail you out.

Smiley, isn't "Flowers for Algernon" a short story or a novella? I remember it not being too long. I went to a public high school in NYC, so they were happy if we could read at all. No assigned reading for me, but I was reading all the Lord of the Rings, Dunes, and stuff like "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" and "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test" (Your parents probably wouldn't want you reading that last one). Oh, and all the Hermann Hesse I could get my hands on. Teenage angst was soooo romantic. ::grins::

I'm Happy to help brain storm, cause we are all done with our big papers so I'm free to help!

Flowers for Algernon is a very short book, if my thinking is correct it is just around 200 pages. Its easy readin, hence why it is a Public school book, everyone can read it. But I'm in Honors so we do get to read books that are more complicated. yeah!

I also read lots of books that are not required. well,Duh how else would i be here? My english teacher like HATES fantasy! Too bad for him!

My paper is done now. I ended up writing about this alien who owns a brain library and happened upon my instructor's brain. One thing lead to another and the assignment is done, though very silly. I'm working on my new assignment. Have you guys read Aimee Bender? The instructor wants me to emmulate (gee, I can't spell) the style of Aimee Bender or create my own short story in the vein of magical realism. It should be fun, all except going through and explaining all the word choices and what symbolism is used and why. I hope to make it to twenty-five pages, but that may be stretching it. Thanks for the support, though, I really appreciate it! :)

Aimee B. (was: "I finally got a copy...")
Posted by Karin on 5/28/2003, 1:00 am

I found this Aimee Bender story by running a web search on her name. Is it just me, or does anyone else think she writes in the rambling style of a Beatnik? As in Kerouac.

Link to: "Quiet, Please" by Aimee Bender (WARNING: Adult content)

Or does your instructor just want the magical realism? And does Bender always save the magic for a suprise ending? O'Henry meets Lovecraft?

OK, so you're supposed to write O'Henry meets Lovecraft in the style of Kerouac. Here's Angi-Kate's story:

O'Henry meets H.P.L. at a beat poetry reading, and Lovecraft scares O'Henry, but O'Henry turns the tables on him with a suprise ending, with Kerouac, accompanied by a bass player, playing the Greek Chorus.

Ta-daaaa!

Posted by Robert on 5/28/2003, 9:34 pm, in reply to "Aimee B. (was: "I finally got a copy...")"

Ta-Daaa indeed.....got a good giggle out of your story which was a great amalgamation of O'Henry, Lovecraft and Bender styles.....however with Bender the magical ending is no longer a surprise it is a predictable outcome.

Re: Aimee B. (was: "I finally got a copy...")
Posted by Angi-Kate on 6/1/2003, 1:24 pm, in reply to "Re: Aimee B. (was: "I finally got a copy...")"

Yeah, that's the problem. (O'Henry-Lovecraft-Kerouac love triangle? What kind of music to they play? hehehe, very funny and very interesting) "Quiet, Please" is part of the story collection we've read for class. Some of her re-occuring themes are penetration and misconnection. (Please forgive my spelling) My favorite story is "The Healer" and I keep trying to combine what I interperet as her ideas with a few of my own and I'm coming up short. Fortunately, the most important part of the paper is analysing why and how the emulation did or did not work. My ideas include a character who looks like one person, but is actually siamese twins, a wanna-be magician who divides herself while performing a rope trick and has to deal with run-away legs, and a married couple, one who paints while the other dances in the opposite end of the house and their arts connect in this wierd metaphisical way that it creates stories. My problem is inserting the sex and symbolism.

Re: Aimee B. (was: "I finally got a copy...")
Posted by Robert on 6/4/2003, 7:37 pm, in reply to "Re: Aimee B. (was: "I finally got a copy...")"

Funny you should use the word insert to describe sex and symbolism. Rather than trying to use both sex and symbolism try using sex as symbolism. For example, the siamese twins could be a representation of narcissism, the wannabe magician with the runaway legs could be symbolic of uncontrolled libido and the married couple well they're married have her dance nude and he should paint her fully dressed that way each expresses their repressed sexuality.

I never thought of that...I should have checked back here more often for your ideas. I finally finished the paper (16 pages) and though it isn't as complete as I'd like it (it would have been much better with your insights, Robert) I've turned it in and the quarter is over! Thank you all for your help!

Where has Terry disappeared to???
Posted by Robert on 6/4/2003, 7:52 pm

Hi to everyone. Has anybody had any news from Terry? I just viewed the site contest page and it hasn't been updated since March. Has Terry left Eiden Myr or is she just very busy. It would be nice to hear from her. This message board isn't the same without some of her input.

The deadline for Triad is NOW and as far as I know, she was going to be a tad bit late with this one. Everything has been "crazy busy" since I saw her in April and it may be a while before she has time to stop by and post on the board or update her site. I picture her chained to her computer with the internet cord so that she won't be tempted to play online while she has writing to do. Hopefully, everything will be back to normal soon.

Thanks for the update, I'm a tad saddened by the fact that she is so busy and yet it warms my heart to know that TRIAD is in the works. Does that make me selfish or considerate? well here's hoping that the internet cord is not too tight around Terry.

You all are so great! Thanks so much for asking after me. I super-apologize for being so scarce. Intense work on Triad, lots of freelance deadlines, the usual life stuff, some traveling (I had a great time out in Seattle and Spokane in April, especially at Auntie's Bookstore in Spokane, where Angi-Kate was the best host!), music commitments, classes--a pretty standard list. But I'll be around more from now on. And I'll be cooking up a new site contest (with a nod to Robert {g}), and sending out a mailing-list newsletter, all things I've also neglected.

For a few months there, I had an Irish-music session on Wednesday nights that kept me away from the SFLit online chat, but that session just moved to a different night, so I should be back over at SFLit starting next week. I hope some of you made it over there! I was psyched to see that thread. Thanks, Karin, for posting the reminder.

Right now it's a lovely rainy day and we have a new barbecue grill to put together, but I'm so glad I popped over here. Thanks for hanging in! A heartwarming thing to find on a cold wet day. {smile smile, with a nod to Carlee, who is the smile queen {g}} Missy's right--it definitely lightens the captivity. :)

Welcome back Terry. This circle has been somewhat at a loss without your voice being heard. Although Angi-Kate, Smile Queen and Karin have been entertaining there is a definite something to your posts that keep us coming back to check in on you. Hope the barbecue got put together right....we are now refusing to cook indoors due to the heat so the barbecue is doing overtime. Have reread Illumination and The Binder's Road to make sure that I will be up to speed for Triad. Keep writing for us selfish fans... :)

Thanks for the welcome-back, Robert! I think the barbecue grill got put together right--it looks right--but it hasn't been taken for a trial run yet, because the tank has yet to be filled. And the whole thing is still sitting between my living room and my dining room. It's a great perch for my pets, but friends come by and say things like "Uh, you do know you have a barbecue grill in the middle of your house, right?" and "Hey, duuude, barbecue grill, nice touch!"

Robert, you and the other "selfish" readers are exactly the people I'm writing for, and you're not selfish--you're a gift, to me, and much appreciated. :)

Don't worry about it. You have (had?) a deadline to meet. I've been keeping myself busy with "Lord of Snow and Shadows" by Sarah Ash (due out July 29, 2003 and it is AWESOME after you skip the first chapter of mushy stuff) and catching up on my other reading so that I can get the reviews done for the Auntie's newsletter. Robert has been the brains of the operation, Karen has been fantabulously cool, Carlee/SmileQueen has been a cheery sweetheart and I have been a rude bubblehead. All in all, you haven't missed much since you've been away. :)

BTW, the pictures we took of your trip out here to Spokane have finally been developed and hopefully you will be getting copies soon. L. just gave me mine and you look so happy to be there, signing books and chatting with all of us, and in the ones L. let me keep, I look like the dorky fan-girl that I am. Just thought I should warn ya. Ooh, I just got an idea...

The good thing about online message boards is that I can look back and catch up with what went on while I was away, which I've started doing. Some neat discussions there! You all are so cool.

Hey, pictures, great! I have a couple that Terry K. took, which she says I can post. We'll have to talk about getting permission to post some of the ones that L. took. (You are so not a dorky fangirl, or a rude bubblehead for that matter, but that's another story. *g*)

Thanks for the Sarah Ash recommendation! I'm not familiar with her, so this will be a wonderful discovery.
