Chatting in realtime
Posted by Terry on 6/27/2003, 7:16 pm

Hey, a little virtual bird told me that there was an Eiden Myr person over at the SFLit chat this past Wednesday night. Thank you, whoever you are, for coming by, and I'm so sorry I wasn't there! That was supposed to be my big night for returning to that chat (my Wednesday music gig has moved), but the heat was giving my computer a brain seizure and I had to shut it down. The old creaky backup computer can't handle the chat interface at SFLit/Delphi.

I'll be there next week come what may, so I hope you're willing to give it another try! The folks at SFLit are really great, so I assume they treated you well. :) It would be terrific to see anyone else who wants to come by!

{To get there: http://www.sflit.com/,click on "chat," then if need be create a free login for yourself.}

I cannot believe that something sufficiently serious actually came up to keep me away, but it did: A friend had to move at very short notice. I rented a truck and we did the move. It was one of those moves from hell, starting in early morning and continuing through various states of panic and despair through a very hot day and into the evening. By the time of the chat, we were just finishing the unload. An hour later I was returning the twenty-foot truck, trying to figure out why I'd lost power and couldn't go faster than about 20mph. (Turned out to be a fallen piece of the dashboard lodged under the accelerator. Truck was not in the best condition, as you can probably tell.) So I didn't get home till late. Grrr!

This type of emergency does not happen every week, however, so next Wednesday, and the week after, I should be at sflit.com chatting. But let me not tempt the fates any further! {g}

My virtual bird told me you couldn't make it this next time, Carlee. I hope you won't give up, and I'm so sorry it's been so hard to hook up! It *will* happen!

I did feel somewhat heroic, Karin. But mostly exhausted, relieved, numb. And very grateful for an icy shower! (The people around me were grateful that I took a shower, too. *g*)

Stories from the Serpentback
Posted by Angi-Kate on 6/29/2003, 3:16 am

Here's my idea: In the tradition of the "never ending story" threads, I propose we start a summer story-creating thread where we work on creating a short story that takes place in the world of Eiden Myr. It will give us something to do whilst we await the arrival of Triad. :)

Re: Stories from the Serpentback
Posted by Carlee on 6/29/2003, 2:45 pm, in reply to "Stories from the Serpentback"

That would be interesting but I dont know if it would turn out well or not. Plus, to do something like that dont we need permission from Terry? Anyways if we did it right it might turn out pretty cool. :)

Wouldn't that depend on if the results stayed on this board or not? I've seen a few things like that-they got pretty convoluted, but they could be funny-and fun.

Re: Stories from the Serpentback
Posted by Karin on 6/30/2003, 11:19 pm, in reply to "Re: Stories from the Serpentback"

If Terry approves, you can count me in. We could have a thread written in earnest, and a seperate spoof thread if we're feeling frisky.

I have been pondering this lovely, flattering idea. I fear that this server/message board might not be the best place for it, for all kinds of gnarly legal reasons, but let me muse on it a little more.

I'm so glad you had fun! I don't mind that much when it rains on camping trips, although three-quarters of the whole trip is a lot. But from what you said in chat, you had a lodge to hang out in and play games and stuff, which sounds good. I love being inside a tent when it's raining, and it's cozy to sit and play cards in the rain, but you can go pretty stir-crazy in a tent.

Tales NOT from the Serpentback.
Posted by Karin on 7/12/2003, 6:20 pm

Alrighty.

What if we make up our own place and characters and have at it?

If it's not appropriate to do it here, we can open a new message board somewhere. I'll even volunteer to moderate. I've always wanted to try out those brass knuckles sitting in the back of my bottom drawer...

Also, I'm wondering if anyone here has experience with this kind of group writing?

I have never had any experience in group writing but I feel it would be great to do it. It would be great to see if we could get permission to do a spin off of Eiden Myr stories. I'm really open to anything so whatever everyone else wants to do. :) ~*Carlee*~

*light bulb goes on*

Ahhhh, I get your thinking now. Only took a little while. I'm all for getting something all the way new! How are we going to do it though, like we all get together and think of a setting all the way new then each make up a character and try to make a story out of it? As I have said I'm all new to group writting and I have no idea what to do. :)

Re: Tales NOT from the Serpentback.
Posted by Robert on 7/13/2003, 3:50 pm, in reply to "Re: Tales NOT from the Serpentback."

Well.....group writing takes some getting used to. The fact that two or more people decide to write a storyline does not ensure success. The most difficult part about it will be ensuring that the styles of writing will mesh together. The best way to start is to post a sample of your writing so that you can get a feel for each others style. I may post a little something myself.

My descriptive writing can be pretty good, but I don't do conflict well, so not much of a storyteller.

I haven't done a lot of creative writing latley b/c alas I entered high school and creative writing isn't stressed upon, its the writing papers that include info and you all know. Anyways the last time I wrote something creative was in 8th grade and I have since learned a lot. So, I dont know how my writing has changed but I feel I am good at doing Dialog and thoughts for like one character. LOL does anyone get this? I am so excited to start!

Sorry about going missing, I just got a phone in my apartment and the internet set up this morning! I've got some experience with group writing in my creative writing classes, but we've never done them online before. It can be hard to mesh together different writing styles, but the fun part is being able to fill in with your strenghts where someone else feels weak. So i guess our first item of business is to decide on a message board to host our collaboration. Any ideas?

Triad isn't finished, but it's turning out to be a very cool book, and I'm at that point again where I'm dying to share it with you, but still can't because I keep works-in-progress close to the vest. The moment it's done I will come running in here crowing. :)

I do have a couple of new short stories out, which I'll post about here as soon as I get the newsletter into the (e)mail.

Thanks fer askin'!

Yes it is! That's my poetry chapbook, including some original stuff and some previously published stuff, most of it SF or fantasy, some of it personal (an elegy for my dad). Some of the poems accumulated their own accolades (a Rhysling Award runner-up, some Boomerang Award winners), and the whole chapbook was the winner of the 1997 Anamnesis Press contest.

If anyone picks up a copy to read, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I'm back from a foggy but fun sailing vacation, and voila, the lights go out! I hope that everyone in the Northeast is safe, not suffering too much from the heat, and not too inconvienced by the big power outage. We got our power back sometime between 10:45 and 11:45 last night. I admit I was sort of sorry, because it was so nice sleeping with no streetlights outside, and the stars were so beautiful! But I was glad for the contents of my fridge, for the people whose health relies on electricity, for the safety of drivers, and so on and so on.

It's amazing, and a little scary, how much we rely on electric power.

Go back, Angi-Kate. You won't regret it. I have an almost totally useless music degree that I wouldn't trade for anything! Except, maybe, a lottery jackpot. Then I could go back, get a degree, and retire in the tropics.

GO BACK, now is the best time to do the college thing. I waited before going, didn't loaf around though, got a job instead. It's not the same when you are in your late twenties and in college getting a useless degree (my second one is useful) and believe me the summers get shorter after college.

I've left a message at the Cherryh/Fancher residence, still waiting to get a hold of Dalmas, and James Glass called me back to get more details. He said he'd try to make it. The Irregular Regulars (Including the Bubba clan) are sure to be there, so if you only plan to go to the chats once (and why would you only go once when you could go any wednesday you want?) then that would be the busiest future day to go. If you're looking for any more information, ask Sexy NetFu Master Gordie-san this coming wednesday, and he'll hook you up with all the details. ;)

Wow, a better endorsement I could not have imagined!

I am so sorry to hear you were sick, Angi-Kate--we were a little worried about you when it seemed your connection timed out, but we figured you got busy with something. I hope it wasn't a major bug.

We did miss you last week. Looking forward to seeing you this week!

Angi-Kate, I hope the birthday was fun! And I hope we'll see you next week.

(And maybe Robert and Karin sometime! Karin I've seen in the SFF Net IRC, but haven't yet chatted in realtime with Robert. And anyone else who might be lurking here--just pop in and introduce yourself!)

Yup, I have a "hosted" (though not particularly moderated) chat at irc.sff.net (or http://irc.sff.net/ through the Web) on Thursday nights from 11pm Eastern (and earlier if I can get there after class).

This week I'll be spending more time at the Thursday chat, because I have an important business appointment Thursday morning, so I'll have to cut my attendance at the SFLit.com chat short. Thursday night I hope to be celebrating the successful appointment from that morning. :)

Hope to see you!

The movie was great and I definately recommend it, no matter what the reviews said. You'll be humming the theme music after the show! or maybe dave and i are just wierd enough to do that...Yo, ho! Hi, Folks. Just wanted to check in.

You haven't heard from me in a while because I've been spending my allotted couple of online hours a night researching for a trip to Oaxaca, Mexico and San Francisco.

Capt. Bill and I didn't have a honeymoon when we got married a couple of years ago because of scheduling problems, but we finally get to go this October. Whee!

Ok. This is still in the planning stages because I'm trying to do it all secretly. This is not an easy task when the one doing all the accounting for the household is my wife. What I am trying to put together is a two week trip to Ireland and Scotland for July of 2004. I figure after 14 years of bliss she deserves a great honeymoon. Any ideas....?

Posted by Terry on 9/10/2003, 2:47 pm, in reply to "Re: Where I've been, lately.(Send Robert to Ireland)"

Oh, my goodness, how cool!

Let's see. Ireland first. Do the Ring of Kerry and make sure you do it in the correct direction. If you like rocky rough spectacular coastline, go up to Donegal. If you like storybook fairytale sweet landscape, go to Wicklow. In Galway, go hear an Irish music session ("seisiun") at An Pucan down by the railway station, or Tigh Neachtain, or the Crane Pub. Don't bother with the midlands if you can avoid them, except to drive or train from, say, Dublin to Galway. Cork and Bantry Bay are lovely; Cork is hilly, like San Francisco, and the people have delightful accents. In Dublin, just go wherever the guidebooks tell you, but make a special effort to take a tour of Trinity College (with a human guide, not just on your own, because they have great stories to tell), and go see the Book of Kells. My favorite parts of Ireland are Connemara, in Galway, and the Burren, in Clare, for their spare but beautiful landscape and flora. I found Newgrange fascinating, and recommend a stop there with a tour. There's also the Dingle Peninsula, which has a very scenic drive through Connor Pass to the charming town of Dingle itself. There might still be a pub there that doubles as a leather shop, a nice place to get something handmade on the spot and customized. I still use the leather key ring, with a harp embossed on it, I got there in 1984.

For Scotland, make sure to do the Isle of Skye. In Edinburgh, although it doesn't lack for other attractions, try to take a ghost tour--those are *wonderful*. If you can, go up to John o' Groats and catch a tour over to Orkney, for Skara Brae in particular. I'll have to plumb my memory a little more for other Scotland recommendations, since I was there only once and I've been to Ireland several times.

It sounds like a wonderful trip and a wonderful gift, Robert.

Terry

Posted by Terry on 9/26/2003, 1:41 pm, in reply to "Re: Where I've been, lately.(Send Robert to Ireland)"

Did I mention that Blarney Castle is a great place to visit? Someone else I know is going to Ireland and said he was going there, and I thought, Hey, I've got to mention that to Robert, but I'm not sure if I did. If you do it, make sure to buy the picture of yourself some guy will snap when you kiss the stone. It's actually worth having, IMO.

One time I went, we also did a banquet dinner at Bunratty Castle (other living castles do these too). It was hoaky and touristy but I really enjoyed it. Another thought. Plus they serve mead. :)

--I love the Capt. Bill link!--

If you think that was fun, you should get some buddies who appreciate cult flicks, chill some beers, and see the movie (available from sepnet.com for $14.95).

Bill plays the comic side-kick of the biker gang leader. There are lots of cool bikes, a catfight, and swamp-buggies galore. And the score is real neat-o!

Re: Where I've been, lately.
Posted by Terry on 9/10/2003, 2:49 pm, in reply to "Re: Where I've been, lately."

Hey, we might just do that--I have no lack of buddies who appreciate cult flicks! And I love a good score. (I just liked one theme from a direct-to-video movie so much that I taped it with a cassette recorder next to the TV speaker. How pathetic. But I couldn't bear to return the DVD without getting some record of that 60 seconds of lovely music.)

Great news, Terry! Would it be bad luck to wish you good luck with sales/popularity/royalties?

Indeed, Carlee. I gave out several copies of the "Illumination" paperback last Xmas. I think my friends liked it. I haven't seen any copies show up in the local used book store!

It's not bad luck to wish good sales/royalties at all. Luckily, publishing doesn't have a lot of the superstitions that theatre does. And I don't know what we'd do if it did...exhort each other not to break a pencil? Yikes. *g*

Sigh...it often does, and publishers like it when it does, but not always. Triad is still in progress. But it gets more fascinating and cool as it goes along, so I hope it will be worth the wait! And I hope it won't be delayed till too too late in 2004.

Plus now I can buy both copies as presents for reading friends on my low amount of money.

You are wonderfully sweet to do that. I'm always happy when the paperbacks come out, because hardcovers are just so bloody expensive! I feel much better knowing that people aren't breaking the bank by supporting my work. (That's another reason I love libraries. *g*)

My local Library doesn't have a copy of TBR but they did get a donation of Illuminations in paperback from yours truly. I can't believe how small and insignificant the fantasy section is at our library. Mind you the entire collection numbers approximately 4000 books. It's a small town. But I like to donate books that I have enjoyed and I also like to keep my hardcovers for myself. Generosity has its limits. Happy to hear that Triad is in the works.... but a little shamefaced at the reaction I had when I read 2004. I actually cursed..... I hate waiting when I like something which is why I shell out the bucks for the hardcover. ME WAIT FOR PB not likely.

Re: TBR coming in pb
Posted by Terry on 10/8/2003, 1:24 pm, in reply to "Re: TBR coming in pb"

I so wish I could have had Triad done sooner! But it would have been 2004 in any event, I'm afraid--just earlier in the year, probably a month or two after the January TBR paperback release. I hope it's worth waiting for, though! And I'm hoping to have copious preview materials available for the loyal denizens of this message board. :)

Donating books to the library is wonderful. I don't do that often enough. Your post is a good reminder!

Geeze a year is like no time to wait for a new book I remember that sometimes i hear people waiting 3-4 years on a book. now that is a long time! a preview? yea! your message included the word copious and that reminds me of something my english teacher says a lot. ¡Hola para Oaxaca!
Posted by Karin on 10/17/2003, 8:15 pm

Hey, gang!

We've been here since the 12th and have had some great adventures. I have time to hang around the Internet Cafe because Bill has a bad tummy today, bless him.

We got in late Sunday night. What a beautiful hotel! We have their best room which is just off the roof patio-garden. $43 USD per night. Beers are no more than two bucks, each, anywhere we've been so far.

There's a local concoction called a "Michelada," which consists of a couple of inches of lime juice, hot pepper paste, and ice in a tall glass, to which one adds his or her favorite beer. That's Bill's favorite.

I prefer the "Suero," which is the same without the pepper sauce. "Suero" means "vaccination."

Our first day here, there was a fiesta in a nearby pueblo, so we got up and went. One of our guidebooks told us the festival included horsemanship demonstrations, but it turned out that show had been a few days earlier. The rest of the fiesta was in full swing, though.

After lunch at the fiesta, we decided to see a local stable, and one of the town elders was happy to tell us where. The place was about a quarter-mile from the fiesta. It is run by two young women who warmed up to us once I was able to communicate to them that Bill had been a farrier, and had bred horses as well.

Well, they saddled up a horse named "Goloroso," which means "Sweet-tooth," and gave me a chance to ride around the small ring, and then the big ring, Charro-style. Charro is the mexican cowboy style. Pretty much like the Western saddle, but you make kissing sounds instead of clicking to get them going, and hold the reigns with one hand at all times. The horn on the saddle is much wider than the one on a Western saddle.

Anyway, Bill's turn was next, and he enjoyed Goloroso's gaits. Carlotte, one of the teachers, then got up and showed us Goloroso's "cutting" repertoire. What a blast!

When I get a chance, I'll tell you all about how I wound up singing in a Oaxacan karaoke bar while looking for a place to watch the Cubs-Marlins game.

Oh, and we're hoping to do some trail horse-riding to some ruins in the mountains on Sunday.

Karin,

Sounds like you are having a super fun time! Fiestas are great! And good thing they gave you a horse with a nice name last time i went riding they gave me a horse named Buck. Hope Bill gets better soon. Have a super time the rest of your trip!

Re: ¡Hola para Oaxaca!
Posted by Angi-Kate on 10/19/2003, 2:03 am, in reply to "¡Hola para Oaxaca!"

Wow! You get to go to the ruins?!That should be awesome! I've only seen pictures, but I've always liked the results of field archeology--as in I love to see what they've dug up, but I'd most likely make a mess of things or get bored so I can't be one or it would ruin the coolness.

Bad tummy? Did he drink the water? ;) I hope he gets better. I hate tummy aches, but they're even worse when you are trying to have fun in a foreign place.

It's good that you know the language, though. We had this older Russian lady in the bookstore the other day. She hardly spoke any english at all. She wanted a great big Russian/English dictionary that was bigger than anything we carried. We tried to tell her where other bookstores were, but she was already lost and wasn't sure what the bus was. All we could do was offer her a map, but I felt so bad that I couldn't help her. The worst part was that she was alone. I mean, it's one thing to be lost and not be able to communicate with anyone, but to have to go through all that by one's self--I wouldn't be able to do that.

Anyway, I hope you guys are having fun and you get to stay as long as you want to. I hate feeling like my vacation was too short, and it sounds like you guys are having a blast!

Wow, Karin, what a great time! I'm envious. Except for Bill's stomach upset, of course, but I hope it didn't keep him out of commission long.

It sounds like Goloroso might have had some special gaits you (or Bill) hadn't felt before. Or did Bill just enjoy the smooth ride? I know there are five-gaited saddlebreds and such, but I never got to ride one, so I'm curious.

Hope you're traveling safely, and I can't wait to hear about the horse trek and the ruins -- and the karaoke bar especially. *g*

Thanks for the report!

Hey, thanks for the support, gang!

I'm back home, now, and will need a couple days rest before typing any adventures, of which we had several more!

Carlee, a horse named Buck?! Yee-haw!

Angi-Kate, our Spanish is pretty miserable, but a little talking and lots of miming tended to go a long way.

Terry, you'd have to ask Bill about the gaits. Being somewhat of a riding novice, I only know four. One thing I can tell you is, none of the three horses I rode in Mexico were trained for knee-squeezes, whatever you call them.

And Bill got over his tummy in time for the mountain ride on Sunday.

vacation, school, reading? I hope that you all are still out there, there hasn't been any new posts in a while. So.... What is everyone up to? I personally am excited becuase we finished our class novel so now i can read something of my own choice! and now that marching band is over i have my weekends! So what is keeping everyone else busy?

Writing, for me, of course. :) Also some music and some martial-arts classes. That's pretty much it!

I'm psyched that you get to do some leisure reading now. What are you going to pick?

And I can't imagine how wonderful it must be to be done with band practice for the time being! It sounds like one of those extremely gratifying activities that's also a relief in the off season. :) Yay!

Posted by Carlee on 10/26/2003, 3:18 pm, in reply to "Re: Where's Everyone at??"

I'm soo excited to have time to leisure read, I can't really choose one becuase my reading list is super long but since i can't get to the library at the moment i think I am going to read The Chaos Balance by L.E. Modesitt jr. but after that i am definatly going to the library to start on my reading list. :)

Speaking of reading I finally got my sister to read a book that i recommended, The Elfstones of Shannara, so maybe she will finally take my advice and read Illumination too! yea!

Martial-arts classes sound fun, I took something like that before but i was like 5 and didn't have the concentration.

Re: Where's Everyone at??
Posted by Angi-Kate on 10/26/2003, 11:21 pm, in reply to "Re: Where's Everyone at??"

I love the Shannara books. I'm glad Brooks (or maybe it was the publisher's decision?) is having his books put out in big omnibus collections. I had read most of the series through the library, but the minute the hardcover of the first three came out at Auntie's, I had to get it. Now I'm hoping to get the Heritage Trilogy with my next paycheck. I hope your sister enjoys Elfstones!

With a little encouragement, I'm back into writing, as in, I'm actually applying butt to chair and fingers to keyboard (or pen as the mood takes me), to quote one of my writer-models. I'm still working nearly full time and complaining less about it. School starts in January, so when I'm not writing or working, I'm sewing on the embelishments (darn spelling! leftover gargabe residue...) to David's Halloween costume. Once I'm done embroidering the sleeves, I get to finish my costume, mainly because I don't know what design I want yet. I'll hafta get pictures. After the Halloween projects are done, I've got my wedding dress to make. I've actually got a picture for that. The one I'm going to make is the one on the left. But there are several things that I'm adding that I don't have a pattern for. There was this old edition of "Saint George and the Dragon" that came in at work, and the last picture had the princess wearing a white dress with this filmy-lacy cape that attached along the sleeves with blue stones and acted as the train of the dress. We'll see how that turns out and I'll probably have pictures of that as well.

I'm with Karin. Gorgeous!

I'm so glad you're writing, Ang, and I'm so impressed at all the sewing you're doing! I was just bemoaning how everything my mom taught me about sewing and knitting has fallen by the wayside. I hate to be the dead end of all that experience and craft handed down through generations.

Plus, to make your own wedding dress...what a gift to give yourself. That is so wonderful!

Carlee, your to-be-read books sound great! And if your friend does pick up Illumination, make sure to let me know what the verdict is! I'm psyched that you've got someone else reading fantasy. :)

Also glad to hear thaqt poeple are sitting it down to write.... some of us are avid readers and fledgling writers as well. Terry, I was happy to read that you are taking Martial arts, what type and style are you into. And will we see the influence of this training in TBR? I myself hold a 1st dan Black belt in the Sankukan style of Karate. It has been invaluable for me as a source of concentration, descipline and self-esteem. Hope you are enjoying the training. Maybe I'll be in the chat tonight. By the way the dress on the left was beautiful but the inset on the right was also very nice, imagine it with pearl studded ribon instead of the gold one shown on the picture...would be stunning.

Hey Robert, I'm glad that work let go of you for a few breaths!

I'm training in Krav Maga, which is an Israeli self-defense system--what they use to train the Israeli Defense Forces. It's very street-fighting-oriented, but it's also got the other benefits of martial arts--motivates you to get in shape, helps with balance, coordination, self-confidence, mental discipline. It's great. I got an orange belt in July and now am training for green.

I started doing it after I handed in TBR, but I had time to correct a couple of things before it went to press, so there's a bit of its influence in that book. There'll be more in Triad.

I'm very impressed with the level you've achieved in karate! Would love to chat about martial arts with you any time.

Don't let work grind you down!!

Nope. Warp Angel was fabulous and I'm still trying to get a second copy to lend to people. I might have to break down and buy something over the internet. Bah Humbug! I don't want to join the 20th century! Anyway, still hoping to find something else of his available, but no luck as of yet. I hope he didn't loose himself planet hopping. You know how when kids hear about the magic of finding leprichans in march, and they occasionally see glimpses of the little guys--or you're staying at this house that's supposed to be haunted with this good spirit--or this benevolent being leaves behind something one-of-a-kind just-for-you kind of thing and you're left wondering what happened and where he is now--well, i have no idea what i'm talking about now, but it's kinda like all those things rolled into one and not like any of them at all! Ever since I read Warp Angel and loved it, i've been searching for more of Stuart's work, and in the process turned him into some strange and wonderful mystery man in my head. Then *pop* like a fairy godmother he appears and it's just really cool! But I also feel kinda embarassed because in all of this, I forgot he was a real person, too. A very cool real person--so i guess i'm red-faced because i forgot he could talk, if that makes any sense at all.

Re: (no subject)
Posted by Terry on 1/2/2004, 10:23 pm, in reply to "Re: (no subject)"

Oop, I missed this message, too, and after all that tidying up I was so pleased with myself for doing around here. :)

I know just what you mean, at least in the way that authors can become constructs in my head with almost no relation to the real human beings I know they are, out there somewhere. There are a few writers (Greg Egan, Neal Stephenson) I hope I never meet, because, perverse as it may sound, I actually don't want the real person interfering with the construct in my mind! I feel too protective of my relationship with the sentience I sense behind the narrative of their books. Isn't that funny?

Then again, sometimes I have a cherished relationship with what I perceive to be the writer's narrative sentience, and then I meet the person for real (Graham Joyce, for example, who's such a great guy), and there's not only no damage to my reader/narrative relationship, but there's no effect on it whatsoever. The two things can exist as almost entirely discrete entities.

Re: (no subject)
Posted by Angi-Kate on 1/4/2004, 10:43 pm, in reply to "Re: (no subject)"

Yep, exactly. The latter one matches my imagination of you and the real you--mainly because I got to know you before I had completely created you in my head. But both the real and the construct are/were great people whom I still admire. :)

Yeah, I heard you folks in Washington State were having snow--we had people flying back to that area from the convention, so the topic came up, in balmy Washington, D.C. (where all the sweaters I'd so efficiently prepacked had to be switched for other clothes at the last minute). Glad there were no major road mishaps!

Carlee, I still haven't seen Finding Nemo, but I'll put it on my Netflix queue right away. The animation looks gorgeous. I just got Spirited Away and Castle in the Sky, so it'll be an animationfest.

We've got dreary-ish overcast here, still warmer than it should be. But the autumn colors are coming in nicely!

Got snow, freezing rain, rain, and a mix of almost every variation of fall weather you can think of. And up here, people forget how to drive if it rains never mind when it snows. That's what you get for wanting to live north of the border. One good thing about this time of year, the fireplaces start to become active and that makes watching animation alot more fun. By the way FINDING NEMO was great fun, Dory (voiced by Ellen Degeneres) is the stand out star of the show. She reminds me of people I know.

Yeep, freezing rain...we've got rain rain now, which is icky enough if you're trying to get somewhere unsoaked. But soon it will be cool enough for that wonderful fireplace smell to pervade the air. Mmmmmm.

Another vote for Finding Nemo. I'm sold. It's next on the Netflix queue, though it lists as "short wait."

Re: Snow!
Posted by Karin on 11/8/2003, 1:08 am, in reply to "Re: Snow!"

Yes! Loved that, too, but "Spirited Away" was a little more bizzarre, which scores points with me.

I have a copy of "Ghost in the Machine." The story is OK, but the mood scenes are most excellent.

Re: Snow!
Posted by Angi-Kate on 11/9/2003, 2:27 pm, in reply to "Re: Snow!"

Haven't seen that one, but I did watch "Ghost in the Shell" which is big on sci-fi theories and has great animation, but has very little in the way of story. Made by the same guys who did "Blood, the Last Vampire," which was too short but a good one to see anyway. I think that my favorite part about "Spirited Away" was all the culture and spiritual beliefs packed into the movie. Since I've started watching anime, the whole western "all demons are evil" is ebbing away into realizing that there is a spiritual conciousness that many have recognized over the centuries, but no one has the right words to describe it. Just something to speculate on, I guess. Even with the bone folk, there was an apprehension as to whether these beings are good or evil. Some people feared them and others didn't, and a few went as far as to exploit their powers for personal gain. --I better stop, I'm babbling again. Sorry. ^_^

Re: Snow!
Posted by Robert on 11/10/2003, 9:23 pm, in reply to "Re: Snow!"

You're not babbling, you're right. Incomprehension often turns to fear or loathing. Spirituality is often misunderstood and therefore often ridiculed. Evil spirits or demons are only as evil as our culture tells us they are. We revile what we don't understand. Could it be that we revile BECAUSE we don't understand? Food for thought. ;) Anime is great if it gets you thinking.

(starting a new thread for this...the previous posts are quoted at the bottom) [Archivist's note: Didn't include that quoting (sorry it was so long, Carlee! *g*), because the other thread is in this file.]

I watched Finding Nemo yesterday, and just loved it. I'm one of the (few?) people who didn't like Shrek, and as much as I didn't like Shrek, that's how much I loved Nemo. Clever and original and moving, with many laugh-out-loud moments, and such gorgeous animation.

I think there's a bonus DVD with additional special features on it. That's probably where the short is, Karin. Let me know if there's good stuff on that second disk. It has to go separately into the Netflix queue.

Princess Mononoke is wonderful. I also keep a special place in my heart for My Neighbor Totoro, which is a gentler treatment of the message that nature is part of us and all around us, with its own sentience--that spiritual consciousness that Angi-Kate mentioned. I can't wait to see Spirited Away, but I'm saving it for a special film night with a family member who's going to love it too.

I remember thinking that Ghost in the Shell was really cool, as I was watching it, but now I can't even remember the storyline, which definitely gibes with what you said, Ang. Heh.

Fascinating discussion about spirits and cultural (mis)apprehensions.

Hey, Carlee. I know what you mean about everyone being into anime at school. Even so, "Spirited Away" is one that shouldn't be missed.

This reminds me of what a friend in college told me about peers and fads. She said there were 4 degrees of faddism.

1) You're clueless about what's in fashion.

2) You found out what's in fashion, and you join the fad.

3) You're too individualistic to join a fad, so you don't have anything to do with the fashionable thing.

4) You're not a joiner, but the thing that's in fashion has some appeal to you, so you try it out. It's up to you whether you get sucked into the fad or not.

Karin- who wore Earth Shoes and Frye boots in the 70's.

I found out another thing about "Ghost in the Shell." One of the best things about it is the music, and it turns out that the composer also did the music for "Ringu," which was remade as "The Ring." Now I have to see "Ringu!"

Welcome, Skeen!

As a matter of fact, I was just thinking of treating myself to some DVD's so I can have the subtitled/dubbed version of "Ghost in the Shell."

Re: Anime and animated movies
Posted by Karin on 11/20/2003, 11:02 pm, in reply to "Re: Anime and animated movies"

Hm... Slipped on the "post" button.

Anyway.

I'm thinking of getting DVD's of "Perfect Blue" and "Akira" as well. I'll see if I can view them first, but here in the middle of nowhere, it's hard to rent or borrow uncommon DVD's.

I'd do it Terry's way, but we already have an arrangement with the local shop.

By the way, "Ghost in the Shell" contains violence and nudity, and I think "Perfect Blue" has an R rating.

Re: Anime and animated movies

Cartoon Network did a good thing by adding anime to their programming. I am now thoroughly (leftover gargabe residue, causes bad speling)adicted to Inu Yasha. That's what I get for house sitting for someone with cable. I've noticed a trend with "blue" anime's, as in, there are lots. Haven't seen Perfect Blue, have seen Blue Submarine something-or-other a while ago. And because it's so late, I keep thinking that Cowboy Bebop, Bublegum Crisis, and The Big O all have blue in the title somewhere. I'm going to bed.

Oh, and welcome to the proxy circle!

And does anyone know how i can get a hold of Rick Parks? Probably wednesday huh? I've got to keep a promise...

I LOVE SPIRITED AWAY!! I have to say that that is my absolute favorite anime movie ever. I absolutely love finding nemo too, it is the best animated movie ever (close second was the lion king even though the lion king play is better)

I do like shrek though, it's just a funny movie to me. has anyone seen the show Yu Yu Hakusho, its intriguing but it isn't my favorite. an excellent anime is .hack/sign, it has a very interesting concept (plus the video games are cool) anyway, I'm happy i found even more people who like anime. manga is cool too.

Really? Yu Yu Hakusho is really popular, I have a friend that owns practically every single one of the YYH DVD's. And I havn't seen much of .hack/sign but the premise of the series is awsome.

I swear I had not heard of YYH before! I'm usually not quite that out of the loop. Thanks for cluing me in!

A couple of other series I like (that I think have gone unmentioned here) are Revolutionary Girl Utena and Rurouni Kenshin. Have you checked out either of those? I've seen maybe half the episodes of each, and so far they're great.

I'd like to hear more about the premise of .hack/sign.

Wow, Black Friday? I've always heard it called Green Friday because everyone is spending their green. For the next month I am down to one day off per week, people think that Christmas gives them the excuse to be extra crabby, and one guy even complained that the Christmas music was poor customer service. It wasn't like he was upset that we were playing too much or not enough churchy music, but that we were playing seasonal music in the first place. 'Tis the Season, I guess. But that's okay, I get to be dressed up as an elf whenever I want to and next weekend I get to be Auntie Claus from the book by Elise Primavera. That costume is so hard to keep up. The cape is heavy! And I don't get a little doggie to help hold it up.

Wow, what an awesome costume! Take pictures. I'd love to see that.

I'm not sure why people here call it Black Friday. Green Friday makes more sense. "Black" might come from the crowding and the traffic. In Ireland, they'll say a pub is "black, just black!" when it's so crowded you can't even get in the door. There was mall traffic here at six in the morning. The roads were "black." *g*

Yeouch! Hopefully things will go better for you now that Christmas is only four days away! Maybe you'll get a new keyboard so that you can use your computer again. Sorry about the Winter Formal, though. I found it was always much more fun to go to dances on my own, it gave me the freedom to dance with whomever I wanted to and not feel stuck sitting on the sidelines with a guy who was cute, but too afraid to even shuffle. Maybe you and a few friends could go and make a night of it. Hope you have a better week!

Re: (no subject)
Posted by Terry on 12/21/2003, 11:15 pm, in reply to "(no subject)"

I'm with Angi-Kate: I think you should go with some friends and have a great time! And if your friends all seem to have dates, go anyway. The only part that might seem hard is walking in. After that everyone will be milling around and you can just join the crowd and enjoy yourself.

I hope the charm turns up! Maybe someone will find it and turn it in to the lost-and-found. Make sure you check. I took off a gold neck chain at a martial-arts class a few months ago and forgot it at the gym. When I went back the next week, someone had found it and given it to the front desk for safekeeping. I was amazed and so relieved!

I also hope the keyboard situation improves. Weird keyboards drive me crazy!

Sorry to hear your Xmas was lame! What didn't you like about it?

Ours was pretty good. Had a nice relaxing day with family, and then saw a ton of extended family on Saturday. I grumbled about having to put a tree up, but now I'm glad I did--it's so peaceful and pretty, with the lights softly flickering within the branches.

Any New Year's resolutions, Lia?

*g* Karin!

I want to buy stock in a company that makes paper towels. Eco-correct, recycled-materials paper towels would be good. I just tear through those darn things.

Re: stock tips?
Posted by Terry on 12/17/2003, 11:25 pm, in reply to "stock tips?"

Carlee, I have no idea which are good stocks, but how about choosing a company that does something, or makes something, that interests you?

I know you like books, so how about Barnes & Noble, or Waldenbooks, or Amazon, or some kind of publicly traded bookseller?

Or how about a company that makes musical instruments? I have no idea if there are any on the stock market, but researching that would probably be part of your assignment. Is the Steinway & Sons piano company traded on any stock market? You could look for something like that.

Let us know which one you pick!

Icky flu made me miss the chat. At least it hit on my days off work.

I hated the stock project in high school. After not finding one i liked after the first week, I just radomly chose one to watch and report on. Darts are probably more fun than the close-your-eyes-and-point method, but I agree with Terry. To make the project more worthwhile, find something that interests you. By the end of my project, I didn't even know what my company did, and I only made a small profit. Good thing we weren't using real money. Hoffman's might be a way to go for the music thing, as far as I know, several schools in Washington only offer instruments to students through Hoffman's.

Happy holidays to you, too, Carlee! Winter break is a wonderful thing. :)

You could leave your stocks the way they are and claim that you're "indexing." The fun part would be figuring out what your stocks have in common and what improvised index they might represent.

Re: stock tips?
Posted by Terry on 12/20/2003, 1:54 pm, in reply to "Re: stock tips?"

Hoffman's! That rings a bell, as it were.

The only time we did a stock project in school was at some point in grammar school. I had absolutely no conception of what the whole thing was about. I was still at the stage where my dad gave me a quarter to buy a packet of Kool-Aid to start a Kool-Aid stand and tried to explain about capital investment. What I really liked about the stock project was looking at the arcane, esoteric, tiny little stock symbols in the newspaper. I had no interest in understanding what they meant. They just looked so cool. :)

Our snow last for a couple of days. By today about two-thirds of it had melted. Tonight and tomorrow we get rain and warmer weather. Presumably at some point the process will begin again with the sudden dip into coldness and snow.

You remind me conversely of the Irish, who pull on shorts and bathing suits and go sunbathing and swimming in Galway Bay when the temperature rises to a balmy 60.

There must be cosmic symmetry. :)

Karin, How about we switch so you can feel some real cold? It was about 12 degrees this morning not including the windchill.

that is funny about the irish. A friend of mine and myself decided that we were going to go live in Ireland or England because its more cloudy there and therefore we wont get as sunburned. we were both lobsters after band camp. LOL!

Have fun with the snow everyone. ONLY 10 DAYS UNTILL CHRISTMAS! YEAH!

I think our schools have gotten gypped out of snow days in every blizzard so far this winter. The big one happened mostly on a Saturday.

And the lesson from the latest storm is:

Never, ever mulch the morning paper with your snowblower.

Aieeee! Poor snowblower! Well, it's more informed about current events now. If it starts expressing opinions about the next presidential election, you know you have trouble.
