Book Report (continued)

Posted by Angi-Kate on 12/21/2003, 3:32 am

The Knight is now available in bookstores. I just shelved it Friday. This is the first Gene Wolfe book I've ever read, and I love it. The main character, who's real name I've forgotten because he's gone by Sir Able of the High Heart for most of the book, is writing down the whole account of what happened since his disappearance in a long letter to his brother. He was supposed to meet his brother for a fishing trip, but the day before they are supposed to meet, he wanders behind their cabin in the woods and goes cloud-gazing. Suddenly there is this castle in the clouds, far too real to be of his imagination, so he follows it deeper into the woods until he is in a new world with eight different levels, each different and unique and built upon the one before it. The only survivor of a village that was distroyed by 'ogres' becomes the brother Able begins to forget. Like magic, he is given strengths and companions to help him find his way in a world that sees him as a man and expects him to be a hero. A tale of dragons and faery-folk, this is fantasy at its highest. (And the chapters are short so it's really hard to not to say, "Oh, just one more chapter before bed, it's only three...")

Just finished reading the book, and I swear I am a walking posterboard for fantasy novels. i was reading "the Knight" on my way back to work from lunch when this guy asked me about it, and i think i let him know more about the book than he wanted. People just shouldn't ask me what I'm reading if they want an honest answer.

We may have just vicariously participated in the creation of a new Gene Wolfe reader! That guy might have felt a moment of information overload, but I bet the book will stick in his mind. The rest could be history. Don't take off the posterboard! :)

Have you met Diana Pharaoh Francis? Her first book, "Path of Fate" came out last November and it is awesome! We're trying to get her in for a reading since she's in Montana, but it won't be until summer, though. Dave laughed when he checked my mail for me and she had written back, saying, "You sure are friendly to have all these people writing to you. Either that, or crazy!" It's fun to know the person behind the book. (Speaking of, I still need to write to Rick...)

The bonefolk (Warning: Possible Binder's Road spoilers!)

Posted by Terry on 12/26/2003, 1:35 pm

A friend who just finished a reread of Illumination said something interesting after reading just the Mellas prologue to The Binder's Road. He liked the bonefolk as portrayed in the first book, where most of their activities were left to the imagination, and he felt (I think) a little betrayed to have them more fully realized to his mind's eye--at least in a visual sense.

I don't know how he'll feel about it when he's finished The Binder's Road, but it's something that I've wrestled back and forth with as I wrote both TBR and most of Triad, so I'm curious:

Are you interested in finding out more about the bonefolk--their origins, their nature, their "secrets"--or would you have preferred for them to stay mysterious and chilling and ineffable?

I'm going to use this opportunity to add a little poll here, just for fun and to see how the new feature works.

Cool, i got to vote first. I like the bonefolk, both in that they have a history worth knowing and that it's a story that's hard to know. If they were completely explained, the 'magic' of them would somehow be gone. Yet again, finding the perfect middle ground is hard, too, and if they were completely left to the imagination as in Illumination, they couldn't be the fleshed out character beings they are in TBR, which i thouroughly enjoyed. I would love to know more about the bonefolk, but i still want there to be some mystery, too.

Re: The bonefolk (Warning: Possible Binder's Road spoilers!)

Posted by Carlee on 12/27/2003, 6:51 pm, in reply to "Re: The bonefolk (Warning: Possible Binder's Road spoilers!)"

Well I was the third to vote, and it looks like your getting a pretty consistant vote so far, Terry. I agree with what Angi-Kate, I like that the Bone folk were explored more in TBR but they are still mysterious. I mean something that really bugs me is when an author leaves readers to make up something for themselves, becuase of course we can't just be satisfied with being mysterious. Its the author's story and its kind of ruins it when you have to make up something to go into the story. Do you guys get it? But i think that the bone follk should remain just a little mysterious like you know enough about them that you don't have to make anything up but they are still something that you dont know everything about. Gosh I hope this makes sense.

Posted by Karin on 12/28/2003, 12:24 am, in reply to "Re: The bonefolk (Warning: Possible Binder's Road spoilers!)"

Thanks for asking, Terry, but I think it's not so much whether you reveal more about them as how.

You've been good at not explaining things directly. You give clues that point toward possible or obvious conclusions, but they're still the readers' conclusions. My vote is for you to continue along that path.

I'm glad you developed them more in TBR. If their history, etc, are important to the story line of the next book, then by all means include those. The bonefolk were important enough to the first two that they would leave a void if they weren't continued. I wouldn't "flesh them out" for their own sake, though.

Re: The bonefolk (Warning: Possible Binder's Road spoilers!)

Posted by Angi-Kate on 12/28/2003, 3:37 am, in reply to "Re: The bonefolk (Warning: Possible Binder's Road spoilers!)"

Actually, I think Carlee was the second to vote. The poll gave the option to go back, so i did so that i could write my comments, but i didn't un-mark the one i voted for, so i think it counted it twice.

College rarely gives snow days, but we've had blizzard conditions so there's already about an inch of ice on the roads and with the recent storm system, we're expected to get eleven inches of snow. In conclusion: if classes aren't cancelled, I'll be taking the 7 am bus out to school, the city bus, in sub zero temperatures. Well, at least they were this morning, but it had to warm up to snow. Heaters are breaking, pipes are busting, and this is shaping up to be IceStorm '04. Wishing warm weather, or a school break, your way!

And glad that school has started, Angi-Kate--but sorry to hear about the subzero weather. We've got some of that coming ourselves. The TV news is all in a tizzy about the big freeze. But they like to get in tizzies. Our big freezes are nothing like what other parts of the country get.

I love to sing, too! I don't think we get to do enough of it in our ordinary lives. I used to sing in a choir, and I miss it. My favorite thing is singing harmony.

There isn't too much singing in The Binder's Road, alas, but there is in Triad! It's been such a strange experience for me to write books about a place where there was no music except for the mages who were allowed to sing, since music is so big a part of my life. I'm psyched to find out that you're into it, too.

I can't wait to read Triad if there's a lot of singing binders in it. I am registering for freshman year of high school right now and am kind of bummed out about me not being able to be in my schools smaller choir that is one of the most amazing group of voices I have ever heard. But Sophmore year here I come. I might get the chance though, its a good thing the schools short on tenors. but anyway, any possible general info on when Triad might come out? Don't you just love nosy people :).

It is a bummer when groups like the smaller choir aren't open to freshmen. I hope the school's lack of tenors turns out to be your gain, and you get to sneak in early! That would be great.

I don't have a publication date for Triad yet, but I hope I will in the next ten days or so. I'll post it here!

I wish you well on your fantasy writing. I've fallen out of the "whenever" catagory into the "used-to-pretend-to-be" catagory. I've come to the realization that writers write, and I just don't. I've taken up clothing design based off of some of my favorite fantasy styles and hope to start wearing some of my creations soon. I keep meaning to get pictures up of the robes I made last year, but haven't had the camera to do it. Wedding stuff is going well, just got some 40% off coupons on fabric so I can start gathering materials for the dresses and not go over budget.

Writing and clothing design

Posted by Terry on 1/22/2004, 3:15 pm, in reply to "Re: I loved the book Illumination, discovered the site and now I'm completely lost"

Writers write, but some writers write very slowly and don't produce a big body of fiction. Some of the best writers I know, in fact. David Marusek comes to mind. Also Mark McGarry (my pseudo brother). Neither is what would be called prolific, but what they publish is outstanding.

I hope you won't pack in your writing because you feel you aren't producing enough. And you *never* "pretended to be" a writer, believe me. You are a writer, and a good one.

On the other hand, I'm excited that you're focusing on your clothes design! I want to see pictures of those robes! And I'm psyched to hear that wedding preparations are going well. I can't wait to see you in that dress. :) :)

No, Tricksters Choice is the first in this series. It's an awsome book with an interesting plot line. There's not as much person leading into action as there is in the others but the whole tricking people and persuasion is very interesting. anyway tell me what you think.

whyette

P.S.> I'm still on Chapter 1 of The Binders Road, but I've had a lot of homework lately. I've been a little confused so far but I think its just me. The two prologue thing kind of threw me off. anyway like it so far.

I hate exams ...I'm taking mine this week, yesterday i took my computer technology exam, don't know how i did and today i took my spanish 1 and Physical Education exam ....uhg ...i've got 4 more to go! My spanish teacher is whack ..She laughed at us saying we were different lol, have you ever had a teacher that just goes on and on and on with explaining why shes doing a particular thing? It gets very boring and annoying after uhh.. like 5 months lol And she was doing that today in class, its kinda like that teacher on charlie brown all she says is " blah blah blah blah" ...

How long has it been..........

Posted by Robert on 1/15/2004, 4:00 pm

Hey everyone, I hadn't realized that I hadn't posted in such a long time. Welcome to all the new blood (young and old). It's great to see that some of the younger people are into reading and not just the video games (have nothing against them I'm an avid gamer). How is everyone doing? A special hello to Terry - Happy New Year all the best to you and yours, but most importantly health and happiness and many more novels. I need a new one from you to read during the cold snap that we are having up here in Montreal (right now it is -41 degrees Celsius that's -41F funny how at that temperature cold is cold even in metric.

Robert! Welcome back!!!! I hope that your new year is great too! Man i thought that it was cold here but zero(F) is nothing compared to what you have BRRRRRR!

Robert, it's great to see you back! Boy, you've humbled me with your Montreal temperatures. We've had record cold down here, and of course everyone is freaking out about the "deep freeze," but we're talking 1 degree Fahrenheit with a windchill of -12 or thereabouts. Luckily, I've been inside working on that new book for you {smile}, so I'm keeping toasty and warm. We won't talk about the pipe that froze last week. (Yikes.)

Hope you're thoroughly bundled up and that the car tires don't freeze flat on the bottoms! Any time you thaw out enough to drop by here is a happy day. :)

Was this the place? Awe well ...hehehe ...Hmm .how was everybody's weekend ..Mine was great i spent it with my free greatest friends Brianna,Jenni, and Frankie ....but one of my other friends moms like to make rude comments about people's lifestyles

Re: No prob

Posted by Terry on 1/20/2004, 8:03 am, in reply to "No prob"

Argh, very sorry to hear about the rude mom. That can be very galling. Just remember that sometimes the best response to rudeness is to be the very picture of politeness. Especially when it's a friend's mom! *g*

Re: No prob

Posted by Carlee on 1/20/2004, 5:21 pm, in reply to "Re: No prob"

Arghh its hard to be nice to someone you dont like. I know first had there is this kid in my band that likes any girl he comes into contact with and he is obsessed that I have a Twin and that we look alike.

Talking about Weekends, we had a three day and my best friend and i went to see Return of the King, it was awesome! great ending to an awesome serise.

She's not really a friend of mine ...she was kinda forced on me ..which sucks really bad ...and shes just as rude and evil ..maybe even worse ...>.< ...It hard to be polite to someone who always makes fun of you ...

To Carlee, wasn't the movie great?!?! I loved it ..i seen it twice ...i loved it !

Re: LOTR3

Posted by Angi-Kate on 1/21/2004, 9:23 pm, in reply to "Friends .."

The movie was awesome! When I went there were several elves in the crowd, long ears and everything. We all seemed to laugh and cry together, and cheer! It's the only time a large group in this town has been united in anything!

Re: LOTR3

Posted by Lia on 1/22/2004, 4:38 pm, in reply to "Re: LOTR3"

Elves in the crowd?!?! How cool ...I wanna be an elf >.<, anywho thats cool! None of my friends are really into it, they all call me a freak of nature cuz i like it so much lol ...I got action figures ! ^.^ i got the whole fellowship and a big one of Aragorn and Legolas and a medium size of Frodo ....yup!, cuz i'm cute !

Re: LOTR3

Posted by Angi-Kate on 1/23/2004, 1:21 am, in reply to "Re: LOTR3"

The action figures looked a little too much like spat-out goo to interest me. Some of the monsters are cool, though. I was hoping they'd put a little bit more detail into the figures and was disappointed that they didn't meet my expectations. J. from work saw the movie yesterday and said I look kinda like Liv Tyler, so i did my hair up like her's for work and told her i was "Liv-in' it up!" which garnered several "boo!"s

Re: LOTR3

Posted by Lia on 1/23/2004, 5:16 pm, in reply to "Re: LOTR3"

lol !!! hehehe "liv-in' it up" lol funny ......i'd laugh ..lol maybe cuz i'm a bit slow like that ..but oh well ..i got pink nail polish in my hair!!! AHHH and my glasses broke today at school ..so i can't see !! ..tried to take them to the optomotrist but they were closed >.< evil people, so i'm blind for now, or until i find a tiny small screw driver

Re: LOTR3

Posted by Angi-Kate on 1/26/2004, 12:13 am, in reply to "Re: LOTR3"

I hate trying to see those tiny little screwdrivers without my glasses! Talk about anoying. Have you thought about contacts? I've come to the conclusion that I'm too afraid to poke myself in the eye twice a day to wear them. I've got to get new glasses soon, though, these old ones make things look the same as when I'm not wearing them. Oh, how many fingers am I holding up? '_^

Re: LOTR3

Posted by Lia on 1/26/2004, 9:05 pm, in reply to "Re: LOTR3"

Lol i finally fixed them lol i can see the screw pretty well, i'm used to always having to fix them, they like to break on me often ...I've thought about contacts but i think i look better with glasses on than off ...so i'm sticking with Glasses for now..i need new frames lol and i just got them a couple of months ago ..they're already bent and the lil leggy things stick way too far out ! ...

Re: LOTR3

Posted by Nick on 1/28/2004, 2:20 pm, in reply to "Re: LOTR3"

I highly reccomend LASIK surgery. I went from glasses to contacts then had surgery and I felt like a new man when I had 20/20 vision without anything in/on my eyes. Its amazing! If you or your parents can afford to spend about 1200-1500 bucks, it is a great investment. (Tell them it will save them money down the line on new glasses. "It pays for itself")

Re: LOTR3

Posted by Lia on 1/28/2004, 6:57 pm, in reply to "Re: LOTR3"

We talked about eye surgery a few times, but not that much maybe later on they'll get it done for me but, at the moment don't have the money for it.....i'd write more ...but my mind is just blown away, my dog is bleeding internally right now and he's terribly afriad of my other dog right now ..so we think she had to do something with it ...i don't know >.< ..I hope my baby gets better!!!

Poor puppy! :(

Posted by Angi-Kate on 1/28/2004, 9:43 pm, in reply to "Re: LOTR3"

It might not be that she had anything to do with it, maybe the other dog likes to play a little rough and he doesn't want to move much. One dog I helped that had jumped off the bridge at the park was so shocked he acted super happy to be around everyone. From my vet clinic experiences, when dogs are hurt they usually don't want to be messed with and try to hide under things or behind people they know will watch out for them. I hope he gets better, too. What did the vet say? Did they have to keep him overnight for observation?

Re: Poor puppy! :(

The vet let him come home and she gave him somes meds and this weekend while were away shes going to watch him and make sure nothing goes wrong, he's doing better now

Whew!

Posted by Terry on 2/5/2004, 1:27 pm, in reply to "Re: The pupster"

I'm *so glad* to hear he's better, Lia. If the other dog is doing him any harm, you could always think about separating them for a little while until this guy is completely back on his feet. But it sounds like pretty customary doggy rough-and-tumble, and I bet they'll be back to normal in a few days.

Yay!

Re: Whew!

Posted by Lia on 2/6/2004, 8:08 pm, in reply to "Whew!"

Yeah ...the vet said it was also due to him being overweight ! XD lol ..i've got me fat lil weiner dog who cant jump uo ....my fat lil cow... He got hurt agin last night and we gave him one of his pain pills and he was much better ..he tried to bite me though !! Thats must mean hes getting better ....getting onto his normal task of attacking ppl ...sheesh ....

Hour of the Wolf

Posted by Terry on 1/16/2004, 5:44 pm

Hi, all! A quick announcement to say that I'll be appearing on the New York City radio show "Hour of the Wolf" on February 21st--not tomorrow morning, as mentioned on the Appearances page! Both the host and I needed to rejigger our schedules, so we set it for next month instead.

The show is on pretty early in the morning NY time (5am-7am), but only in the middle of the night Pacific time :), and it's streamed through the Web--there are directions at the show's Website.

Re: Hour of the Wolf

Posted by Robert on 1/18/2004, 12:12 pm, in reply to "Hour of the Wolf"

Hi Terry, I'll be listening in on the website because New York radio shows are pretty hard to receive up here. I've just put a note on the calendar for the 21st to get up early but then again I'm always up early to clear the snow off the car.
The extreme cold snap has finally let up. It is now a balmy -15C (that's 5F). By February it should be up in the + degrees hopefully. Looking forward to hearing you, by the way, what's the topic of discussion going to be?

Re: Hour of the Wolf

Posted by Terry on 1/18/2004, 7:55 pm, in reply to "Re: Hour of the Wolf"

Hey, it'll be great to know you're up there listening, Robert! Although I hate to think of you up early to clear off the car all the time. On snowfall days, when I have to do that, I gripe and groan--and that's only a handful of times over the course of an ordinary winter.

"Hour of the Wolf" is a completely freeform show, so there's no set topic--just whatever the host (Jim Freund) and I feel like talking about. At the halfway point of the show, I'll read from The Binder's Road, since the paperback publication is what I'm officially there to publicize. After that we'll talk a little more, and then take phone calls.

I've been on the show a few times, and discussion has ranged over various topics: my fiction and my experience of the writing trade; what it's like to work in the production side of publishing; TV shows and movies and comic books; a comparison of the politics of radio broadcasting and science-fiction writers' organizations; Irish music (Jim's an aficionado of Celtic folk and rock, and one time a couple of callers were interested in discussing Irish traditional, which is what I play)...that's just what I can remember off the top of my head.

If there's any topic you'd specially like us to talk about, let me know and I'll see if we can slip it in! That goes for everyone, BTW.

I have tapes of my last couple of appearances there, and expect to get one this time, too. At the top of my Website to-do list is to digitize chunks of those and make them downloadable.

Re: Hour of the Wolf

Posted by Robert on 1/19/2004, 11:07 pm, in reply to "Re: Hour of the Wolf"

Wow, sounds like you'll be having a blast. It's always intersting when a show is freeform with no set topic or agenda. It's also nice to see that you get to publicize your newest paperback and discuss topics of interest. There is one topic that I would like to hear you talk about: your devotion to your readers and how important it is for you to remain in touch with them. It might get the message out there to other writers who have lost touch with who puts them on the shelves. Anyways, enjoy yourself and have fun with the callers. I'll be listening......

Re: Hour of the Wolf

Posted by Terry on 1/20/2004, 7:59 am, in reply to "Re: Hour of the Wolf"

Ah, excellent topic suggestion! That'll be easy to slip in, because I love to talk about how great "my" readers are. :) :) Thanks, Robert!

That sounds like a lot of fun, our local christan music station lets area youth groups come in and run the show on fridays which is always fun. Could someone post a reminder to listen like one or two days before the day that you are going on air? Thanks!

Terry, you know I'm devoted, but I'm afraid you lost me at the "7 am" part...

I remember WBAI! They were the first station to play rap back in the, what? 1970's? Always were a cutting edge station.

I'll wish you luck and joy when the date gets a little closer.

Re: Hour of the Wolf

Posted by Terry on 1/21/2004, 6:28 pm, in reply to "Re: Hour of the Wolf"

BAI is a wonderful station, and I'm proud that it survives in our city, which is increasingly taken over by top-40 pop stations. I like listening to pop when I'm in the car, but how many of those stations do we need? BAI is a voice in the wilderness. :)

Thanks for the good wishes! Don't worry about getting up...I'll do my best to put up digitized excerpts here on the site. You wouldn't catch *me* up at that hour, otherwise. :)

Re: Hour of the Wolf

Posted by Terry on 1/21/2004, 6:25 pm, in reply to "Re: Hour of the Wolf"

I will certainly post a reminder.

That station that has a youth-group night on Fridays sounds awesome! In college I hung out with people who did radio, at my college station and at the New York University station, but I was always too shy to try my h/a/n/d/ voice at it. I enjoyed hunting through the shelves of LPs to find funky weird music for the student DJ to play.

Yet another Newbie...

Posted by Nick on 1/20/2004, 2:33 am

Hey Terry, and everyone else too. I just finished Binders Road tonight. Had to check out who this Terry McGarry was and found this site. :) Love the snazzy name. It rhymes... but of course, you knew that heh heh. Can't wait for Triad. I was floored by the cliffhanger in Binder's Road and hoped beyond hope that there would be a third book... but how could there NOT?! Okay, so I am running a little long... Was surfing through the other posts and saw how tight this community is. Thought I'd try to nuzzle in a little bit. :) I'll keep an eye out for new things... I like new things... did I mention I can't wait for Triad?? No really, I CAN'T! Can you maybe post a chapter on the site? Pretty please???????

Welcome aboard!

Posted by Terry on 1/20/2004, 7:57 am, in reply to "Yet another Newbie..."

Welcome, Nick! Great to have you here!

Yup, there had to be a third book, since everything powerful comes in threes. :) Actually, when I wrote the first one I didn't know for sure that there would be others. I'm so glad you liked TBR, and the cliffhanger. I debated about the cliffhanger, but it practically wrote itself, and I just had to include it.

I'm also so glad you're looking forward to Triad! I have a bit I'm eager to post to the site, but I have to talk to my editor about it first. I hope to have a publication date and an excerpt to post within the next week or two.

Thanks so much for joining in! You make a terrific addition to our crew here. {smile}

Nick,

I don't think it's fair of you to give us girls a hard time about discussing good looking actors. After all, weren't you the going on and on about how beautiful Scarlett Johanssen is.

By the way, I agree with Terry about Viggo and Sean Bean. Sean Bean also starred in a series of films about a character called "Sharpe". I think the first one was called "Sharpe's rifles".

I've heard a little bit about some of the other things Sean Bean has been in, and I'd love to see them! I'll keep a lookout for the Sharpe stuff. Thanks, Carmel!

CHINESE NEW YEAR is coming up

Posted by Karin on 1/20/2004, 11:03 pm

When I lived in NYC, some of us who have our birthdays around the end of January used to get together for a New Year's banquet at a Chinese restuarant. They would bring out courses one at a time, and tell us what each one symbolized.

There's a good Chinese place here on the island, and I'm thinking of seeng if some friends want to get a table this year. You usually have to reserve for a largish group, because each course serves a bunch of people.

The New Year of the Monkey begins January 22nd and goes for 15 days. I'm not sure which night is traditional for the banquet. Here are a couple of sites:

Wheel of Timelessness

Posted by Nick on 1/21/2004, 4:39 pm

Thanks for the welcomes everyone. If anyone is interested -- or WAS and lost interest -- in the Wheel of Time, I just read the latest book (Either ten or eleven, can't remember which) and I thought it was pretty good. Seems like he is starting to wrap things up (I hope). I know it kinda got lame between volumes 7-9 but I swear its getting better. :)

Re: Wheel of Timelessness

Posted by Karin on 1/21/2004, 5:15 pm, in reply to "Wheel of Timelessness"

Yes, I've read them. I started out loving them, but every time I finish one, I swear I'm boycotting the next. Then I read the next one.

His characters are interesting, but not interesting enough to spend ten books on what they are eating and wearing and, like, two plot developments per book.

It's time to post the Science Fiction/Fantasy Book-A-Minute link, again!

When it comes to epic collections, George R. R. Martin blows Jordan out of the water (IMHO).

That book in a minute thing is awesome! Its kinda creepy to see how simple my favorite books can get. BTW why isnt Illumination on there???/

Re: Wheel of Timelessness

Posted by Angi-Kate on 1/21/2004, 9:03 pm, in reply to "Re: Wheel of Timelessness"

Because Illumination is too complex to be read in one minute.

New Spring was first published in the Legends Anthology edited by Robert Silverberg. I figure, I can read that version and not have to waste time reading the entire updated version. Only because I've never been a fan of Jordan...

Re: Wheel of Timelessness

Posted by Robert on 1/22/2004, 7:05 pm, in reply to "Re: Wheel of Timelessness"

I had also decided to boycott but when I see the hardcover on sale in the 9.99 rack I can't pass it up but I really hope that the end comes soon cause I'm going bald waiting for Jordan to get on with it.
If you want a good series by an author with a nice name (other than Terry McGarry of course) try Terry Goodkind. His series is quite interesting and each new novel is a new chapter in the epic therefore can almost be read on its own.
But really Terry when is the date coming out so that we can all start the rereads that some of us are notorious for? LOL

Angi-Kate, ditzy is not a word that I would ever use to describe any of your posts. Amusing, thought provoking and humourous now those I would use to describe what you have to write. As for time to reread, MAKE TIME. You can never get enough of a good thing (which describes Terry's writing to a tee).

Re: Wheel of Timelessness

Posted by Terry on 1/24/2004, 10:18 am, in reply to "Re: Wheel of Timelessness"

Thanks, Robert! I can't say enough about how gratifying it is to hear that people are rereading the Eiden Myr books. So far, everyone who's told me they were rereading said they noticed all kinds of new things the second (sometimes third--I'm amazed!) time through. Since I put in on purpose most of the things they mention (there are some happy accidents of fate or the subconscious), it makes my efforts extra worthwhile. There's nothing like having people appreciate what you're doing. {smile}

I'm on the last bit of Triad now--you asked above about a publication date, and as soon as I hand the last of it in the publisher will be able to set that for certain. I can't wait!!

I've read Terry Goodkind. I love his stuff. One author I LOVE and who knows how to stick to three-four novels then end the series is Tad Williams. I highly recommend "Memory, Sorrow, Thorn" and "Otherland". Awesome stories and each is told then ENDS (believe it or not). It is kind of sad when it finally ends, but it is better than not knowing when it will end.

Is any of this getting a bit confusing?

Posted by Angi-Kate on 1/27/2004, 12:18 am

With all of the threads passing off the edge of the page now that we're all talking, is it getting a bit confusing as to how the conversation is progressing? Is there a way to change the format or would you guys even want to? I don't know how the board hosting works, but it's just a suggestion...

Re: Is any of this getting a bit confusing?

Posted by Terry on 1/27/2004, 2:45 am, in reply to "Is any of this getting a bit confusing?"

I'm keen to hear everyone's answers on that, too. I've been worrying for a while now about the unwieldiness of reading messages this way.

The format of this particular board can't be changed, unfortunately--I nosed around the administration area recently to look at just that.

There are always other options, so I'd love to hear what everyone thinks.

Thanks for bringing it up, Angi-Kate!

Re: Is any of this getting a bit confusing?

Posted by Nick on 1/27/2004, 3:52 am, in reply to "Re: Is any of this getting a bit confusing?"

The threads can get a little complicated with different branches and stuff. I have seen other sites that have boards where you scroll through each thread... all the postings appear on the same screen. I don't know if that is better. There are advantages to anything. With the current way, you can ignore posts you don't want to read or have already read. I, for one, ignore my own posts. LOL

I dont know if this is what Nick is talking about but I belong to other board where each thread title appears on the screen, and then you click on the thread to read the posts that go with it. It seems to make things a lot easier.

Re: Is any of this getting a bit confusing?

How about we start a tradition of renaming strings when the subject changes?

For example:

Orlando Bloom is HOT: was "Welcome Aboard!"

Posted by Karin, etc. in reply to "Welcome Aboard!"

I'm with Angie-Kate. Faromir was the hot one. By a mile!

Thanks for the input, Carlee and Nick. I've been checking out some other software and hosts.

(I also tried changing the threading style on this board, but it didn't help much. Carlee, that's what that thread of test posts was. Sorry for the temporary weirdness!)

Thread sprawl

Posted by Terry on 1/28/2004, 10:45 am, in reply to "Is any of this getting a bit confusing?"

Karin's suggestion of renaming thread subjects is most excellent.

For good or ill, though, Boardhost will still tuck the renamed thread under the post it replied to (and indented so that the threads disappear off to the right).

Till I decide about better BBS software, a second way to help clear up thread sprawl is to post replies to the original post in the thread (the one at the top). It's a bit of a pain, but it will keep things tucked in the window a little better.

I'm trying it with this one as an example.

Johnny Depp, on the other hand... Besides playing characters who are tempting even to little old ladies such as myself, he can play just about anybody.

Brad Pitt slightly less flexible, but brilliant and alluring just the same.

Apparently, she's been acting since she was, like, nine. She was in Ghost World with Thora Birch and she played the daughter in Eight Legged Freaks a couple years ago. (that was the giant spider horror spoof) She was also in Home Alone 3 (but who saw THAT one) and her first movie was called North (I vaguely remember that one) ten years ago. Any questions?

Girl with the Pear Earring

Posted by Nick on 2/1/2004, 11:49 pm, in reply to "Re: Scarlett Johanssen"

Girl with a Pearl earring tells the story of Griet, a 16-year old Dutch girl who becomes a maid in the house of the painter Johannes Vermeer. Her calm and perceptive manner not only helps her in her household duties, but also attracts the painter's attention. Though different in upbringing, education and social standing, they have a similar way of looking at things. Vermeer slowly draws her into the world of his paintings - the still, luminous images of solitary women in domestic settings.
In contrast to her work in her master's studio, Griet must carve a place for herself in a chaotic Catholic household rund by Vermeer's volatile wife Catharina, his shrewd mother-in-law, Maria Thins, and their fiercely loyal maid Tanneke. Six children (and counting) fill out the household, dominated by six-year old Cornelia, a mischievous girl who sees more than she should.

On the verge of womanhood, Griet also contends with the growing attentions both from a local butcher and from Vermeer's patron, the wealthy Van Ruijven. And she has to find her way through this new and strange life outside the loving Protestant family she grew up in, now fragmented by accident and death.

As Griet becomes part of her master's work, their growing intimacy spreads disruption and jealousy within the ordered household and even - as the scandal seeps out - ripples in the world beyond.

(from a Scarlett website: Of course, she plays Griet)

In case anyone's interested. The following is a review by the Washington Post Express. Girl with a Pearl Earing, starring Scarlett Johnansson and Colin Firth. The film creates beautiful, painterly images with every frame. But the movie's strengths also prove to be its weaknesses, as visual rapture continually trumps narrative drive. The film unfolds as a series of meticulous tableaux vivants, but like those parlor pastimes, it lacks physical verve and a compelling emotinal charge.

My step-mother saw this picture and said it was slow and she isn't one to be interested in action-packed movies. I'll probably wait until it comes out on DVD before I see it.

I have a college education and I don't know what "tableaux vivant" means. I hate it when critics talk like they are better than anyone else. Okay, I hate critics in general, but who likes em?
I think your step-mother's opinion is probably more useful than Mr "Tableaux Vivant"'s. I just want to see it for Scarlett Johansson :)

Hi, Carmel! Thanks so much for posting the review and your stepmother's response to the film. Both very useful!

I frequently put off seeing book-based films until I've read the book, so I end up waiting for the DVD a lot. *g* (The Shipping News is one that comes to mind. One member of my family loaned me the book, another the DVD, but have I read or watched either yet? Noooo....)

It might be especially important for me to wait with this one, so that my mind's eye can form its own visuals from the narrative before I let the movie overlay them. But if it's that beautiful, I'd like to see it on the big screen. I better get reading!

I don't usually mind films that are stronger on ambience than on narrative, but it always depends on the film. I'm looking forward to this one!

Finding hard to find books

Posted by Angi-Kate on 2/11/2004, 3:20 am, in reply to "Re: Girl with the Pear Earring"

Shameless plugs:

www.auntiesbooks.com
This is my bookstore. Well, okay, it's Chris's, but I work here and we carry both new and used books, though only the used stock is online.

www.abebooks.com
This is united independent bookstores' used books online, or something like that. We use this site for out-of-print searches mostly, but they also have used books listed here and have several venders. One of them would most likely have something.

www.alibris.com
www.harvestbooks.com
www.bestbookdeal.com
www.half.com
More of the same, but moving into the more commercial as it moves down the list. Support the independents, except when you can't, and then don't tell people like me. ^_^

Hope this helps if your set on buying the book, but definately check out the library copy first if you're not sure you're going to like something. It helps to save money for the books you really like, like the hardcover edition of Triad when it comes out...^_^

A huge cheer for independent bookstores!

And I love abebooks.com. It's basically a search engine for independents and used-book dealers, and it facilitates the buying process by letting you order from multiple vendors using one shopping basket. I frequently find myself looking for out-of-print books, and just when I think "This is so obscure, I'll never find it," Abebooks will turn up twenty matches.

I finished my book today, right when i got home from school i got in bed and started to read it, and i finished it. It was a really good book, and i really liked it alot, but i expected it to end differently, I guess i was just a little dissappointed, or maybe it was just the mood i was in at the time, either way, it came out much different that i had thought, now i surely got to see the movie,I know they probably added more to it, maybe even some things that i hope that would happen..oh well ....don't want to bote you with my blabbing and unrelentless mood, ttylz

You are not at all blabbing. :) Glad you finished the book! I've got it one book down on my to-read pile, and when I'm done I'd love to talk about the ending with you.

Maybe someone else has finished too? Just add "SPOILERS" to the subject line and post away!

Lia, I am so sorry to hear that your mom had to leave! It sounds like the kids adore her, and it's going to be a loss for everyone. What does she do there? And when is her last day? Please extend my condolences, and my hopes that she can find another place to put her skills and talents to work.

The kids loved her, some already heard and they were devestated and crying, she even had the principal crying because she had to leave :( her last day was Friday ...shes on disablility and so i don't think she can find another job ..it sux really bad, shes going in on wednesday to say over the morning bulletin that she would no longer be working there...she was a paraprofessional ((teachers aid)) didn't know if i spelt that right??

Yup, I'm pretty sure you spelled it right. That is terribly sad, Lia. I'm so sorry! I hope she can still find some way to work with kids--maybe as a volunteer, if she can afford to give her time that way, or feels up to it. If not, the very fact that she'll be so missed is a testament to years of work she can be proud of.

I hope she's okay! And you too.

Such interesting times...

Posted by Angi-Kate on 1/31/2004, 12:46 pm

Had to share this one: In my Ren. English class the guest professor started talking about the books he did his disertation (sorry for the bad spelling) on. It was called "The Enneads" translated by McKenna. My first thought is Terry's books, and I wonder if she read this one when she was in school?

Second, have you guys heard about the dragon discovery yet? Apparently this guy found a baby dragon in a jar in his grandfather's old house (which probably belonged to the family for generations) and people are deciding whether or not to open the jar and test if the dragon is real or not. The zoological world, based on current data, is more than convinced that the dragon is a hoax, knowing that several schools way back when were very competative in research and believe that someone put together a wax construct to fool another school. But what if it's real? Wouldn't that set science up on its head? My theory, if it is real, is that dragons have a cartalege skeleton, rather than bones, and that the scales acted as an exoskeleton, kinda like spiders, and gave the dragon support for its weight and allowed for such amazing in-flight movement. Like how a shark's bone structure is, but the water acts as the shark's "scales". That would also explain why we cannot find any dragon bones. So what do you guys think about this whole dragon thing?

That is really weird. I think that in my own mind I have totally separated the lines of Fantasy and the real world. Like even the humans in ficton stories are just that I usually dont even put them in my head as "real" It will be interesting if they do open the jar though.

Interesting Finds

Posted by Terry on 1/31/2004, 7:25 pm, in reply to "Such interesting times..."

Nope, I was never assigned Plotinus' Enneads in school, and I wasn't aware of them when I wrote Illumination, although I've come across them since. From what little I've read of them, I gather that they wrestle with some of the same issues that come up in the Eiden Myr books (and in a lot of fiction)--the nature of good and evil, the qualities of mind and body and soul. All the good stuff. :)

I just recently ran across a bunch of Webpages dedicated to a whole theory of psychology (if I'm classifying it correctly) based on enneagrams, and a Website for a clock and calendar in base 9--which was pretty cool, because it's something like what they'd probably develop in Eiden Myr. You never know what weirdly related things you're going to find.

Re: Interesting Finds

Posted by Nick on 1/31/2004, 10:15 pm, in reply to "Interesting Finds"

I've seen the Enneagrams used by writers for character development. Here's an idea... THe book after Triad (I guess that would be the first of a new trilogy LOL) Use just 9 characters, each of them with a personality from one of the 9 enneagrams. Okay, so its stupid to have a book with only 9 characters. But maybe a movie.... hmmmmmm

All is quiet on the boards...

Posted by Carlee on 2/6/2004, 7:37 pm

Hey everyone...
This week had been super busy with our band Solo and enemble this weekend (lots of extra practice this week!) and a concert yesterday. Yeah!

At the concert to take times between bands they showed the trailer to "The Passion of Christ" it looks like to is going to be really great. I know that it has stirred up a lot of controversey. Any one else think it is going to be good?

~*Carlee*~

The Passion of Christ

Posted by Nick on 2/7/2004, 12:44 am, in reply to "All is quiet on the boards..."

Any time there is controversy, it only means someone has something important to say. Usually when that happens there are people who do not want others to hear/see it. I think The Passion will be great, and I encourage everyone to see it, no matter what your view of the matter is. You cannot knock something without experiencing it. A lot of the people who are speaking out against that movie know nothing about it nor have they seen it. I trust Mel Gibson (who is a devout catholic himself) to be true to his heart.

Re: The Passion of Christ

Posted by Terry on 2/10/2004, 8:58 pm, in reply to "The Passion of Christ"

That's well said, about trusting Mel Gibson to be true to his heart. I feel the same way. And I heartily agree--no one should pan anything on hearsay! The most important thing is to make up our minds for ourselves, and the only way to do that is to see for ourselves.

Making up your own mind

Posted by Carlee on 2/12/2004, 9:44 pm, in reply to "Re: The Passion of Christ"

I wish that people at my school can make up their own mind about religion. See, I go to public schools and a group of friends (christian) and I made Valentines Hearts for every locker in the school. and we asked the administrators if we could do it and they said yeah. We did mention that it was a church thing. And so we stayed after to put them in lockers today. So, here we are pushing the hearts half way through the vents and we were almost done when the principal comes and says that we have to take them all down becuase we put a bible verse on each card. And get this it is a small town where like everyone is a christan. It made us sooooooo mad! I think that we should have been allowed to put them up and if people didnt want it they could just throw it away. grrrr!

Sounds like your concert went really well, Carlee. Yay! And that's a neat fringe benefit, to get to see a movie trailer. I'll be very interested to see The Passion when it comes out, although I'm so far behind on theatrical-release films I don't know how I'll ever catch up!

Re: Movies and Concerts

Have you guys seen the preview for "Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights" yet? My dance group is going on the first night, the instructor has already made arrangements with the theatre, and we're going to dance at the movie and have a salsa party afterwards. It's gonna rock! It's a far cry from "The Passion" though. I'll have to check out the trailer online on that one. I thought Mel Gibson was Jewish, but maybe that's Mel Brooks, I always get those two mixed up. ^_^

Any plans for the Phil Harmonic, Carlee? You've been working really hard the past few years, I wouldn't be surprised at all if you toured with a big group. (Just let me know when and where so I can grab a seat!)

The Phil Harmonic, and I hope I'm spelling that right, is one of the largest orchestra ensembles, I think. Whenever there's a big, breathtaking soundtrack I like that's orchestrated, it's usually the London Phil Harmonic or some other one, possibly New York. Wasn't Fantasia the New York one? Anyway, it's big and awesome!

It's a deal, Carlee! I've taken a few swing-dancing lessons, as well as the basic foxtrot and some really fun Cajun dancing, mostly at folk festivals and places like that. But never enough to feel confident in what I was doing. Dancing is just the most wonderful thing.

I'm very envious, Angi-Kate, and I will definitely try to make good on my resolution this year. There's a place in town that offers lessons, which means I'm more likely to do it (because I don't have to travel).

My mom used to teach at Arthur Murray. Hmm...maybe I should just invite her over, and clear some space in the living room...!

I've been taking Ballroom and Latin from Glen Braunstein for three years now, and I'm very sad that this is my last quarter with him. I took swing for one quarter last year, and while it was fun, it's hard for me to keep up with. Glen is a great instructor and you can really tell he loves dancing and teaching. He's continually going out to workshops to continue to learn more styles and techniques. I definately recomend taking lessons, either at college or at a studio that offers social dance sessions as well as lessons.
