Still Waiting

Posted by Nick on 2/16/2004, 1:41 pm

Ya know, I hate to rush you... Naw, I want to. :) Where is Triad, huh huh huh?
Actually, I am proud to say thay I have completed my first screenplay and registered it with the Writers Guild, so I am ready to start looking for an agent. I am excited for myself, so I got to wondering.... Where's Triad???? ;)

Triad is done!

Posted by Terry on 2/18/2004, 11:31 am, in reply to "Still Waiting"

Congratulations on completing your screenplay, Nick! That is a great achievement. And congrats as well for registering with the Writers Guild. The information and protections it provides should be invaluable.

To answer your question...

Triad is complete! I just sent my editor the last of the book. Whew!!! I'm very proud of the results and can't wait for you to read it.

I should have a publication date before too long, but unfortunately it's going to be a bit of a wait for the finished book to come out in stores. However...I have some notions up my sleeve for ways to give the loyal denizens of this message board a sneak peek, so stay tuned! :)

Yes! Triad! Triad! Triad!

Hey, Nick. What can you tell us about your screenplay?

Joining the guild sounds like an excellent idea. I often say that I've learned most of what I know about my trade from my guild. Piano tuner/technicians don't tend to work in groups, so it's a great way to compare notes, talk shop, and make connections.

And then there's group health insurance, but I'll bet all you screenwriters have pickled livers so they probably can't get much of a deal. ::just kidding disclaimer here::

Guilds and pianos

Posted by Terry on 2/19/2004, 2:27 pm, in reply to "Re: Triad is done! and so is Nick's screenplay"

Being a piano tuner/technician sounds a lot like being a freelance writer or editor, in the sense of what can be gained from joining professional organizations. The Editorial Freelancers Association has networking sessions, and classes and lectures, even Scrabble nights, to provide the support and continuing education/training that less solitary professionals usually get in the workplace.

Darn, if we lived closer together, you'd acquire a new client right from this message board! I'll be having my piano moved here from its foster home sometime this year, and I suspect it's going to need lots of TLC.

Congratulations Terry! I am very much looking forward to reading it. So far your trilogy is becoming another one of my favorites. Just curious, what is the average time from publication of a book to that book being sold to the public?

Re: Triad is done!

Posted by Terry on 2/19/2004, 9:50 pm, in reply to "Re: Triad is done!"

Thanks, Carmel!

The time between delivery of a manuscript and publication of the finished book can vary widely. For the "average" book, it's probably about nine months. But (among many other things) it depends on how much revision the editor asks for, and where there's room in the publisher's schedule (or where the book would be most advantageously placed in the schedule). Books can be rushed into print; they can also be pushed back in the schedule for various reasons.

Hope that's a somewhat helpful answer!

The Order of the Prophet

Posted by Nick on 2/21/2004, 9:27 am, in reply to "Triad is done!"

Congrats Terry! :) I can't wait! (I keep saying that but I'm still here waiting... does that mean I CAN wait? Well, I don't want to wait! LOL)

Anyway, for those who asked, my screenplay is a fantasy (of course) about a guy who accidentally kills a bunch of people with his magical powers while trying to save them. This traumatic event causes him to lose those powers. (purely psychological) But when the Goddess of Chaos decides she wants to restart an ancient war that could be the genocide of our hero's people, he must find a way to restore his powers to defeat her.

That's it in a nutshell. I find that everytime I try to explain it that it falls short of what it truly is. Also, since it is obviously a high budget movie, not to mention my first, the chances of it actually being made are slim at best. But I will try. Maybe once I've sold a few "lesser" scripts and ideas, this one won't seem like such a risk to Producers.

Re: The Order of the Prophet

Posted by Terry on 2/22/2004, 11:48 am, in reply to "The Order of the Prophet"

That sounds fascinating, Nick! I know what you mean about summaries falling short--that's frequently the way of it, especially with fantasy stories, which require more explanation than contemporary consensus-reality stories do.

I think it's great that you started with something ambitious. Congrats again on finishing! A massive achievement. Since I can't type with my fingers crossed, I cross my toes for you that it does get made. :)

Echoing Karin in the previous thread...I want to hear more about Nick's screenplay, too!

Or, if you don't want to give details, I'd love to hear more about your process of writing for the screen in general.

In a moment of silliness I blame entirely on antihistamines, I'm appending a poll. *g*

Radio show reminder

Posted by Terry on 2/20/2004, 8:48 pm

Robert asked me to post a reminder: I'll be on the radio show "Hour of the Wolf" tomorrow (Saturday 2/21) from 5am-7am Eastern (U.S.) time. The show's Website gives a link for streaming audio. I hope to also have some audio excerpts from that and previous visits up here on the site sometime in the next month or so.

Show was fun!

Posted by Terry on 2/22/2004, 11:57 am, in reply to "Radio show reminder"

I had a great time on "Hour of the Wolf" yesterday, and I have the aircheck tape, so I can digitize portions and put them up here at the Website. I just have to see if mp3 format will work. I made the reading of "Limnery in Cursive" available here in RealAudio format, but I've been frustrated with RealPlayer myself, and I'd like to find a format that doesn't require that plug-in.

Robert, I have to apologize--we had so much to talk about that I did not manage to turn the subject to my appreciation for all this wonderful interaction with readers. I should be back on the show later in the year, and I hope to get the opportunity then! I loved your suggestion, and have not forgotten. :)

Re: Show was fun!

Posted by Terry on 3/2/2004, 3:51 pm, in reply to "Re: Show was fun!"

Yup, I will be back on later this year, doing a longer reading. We had a lot of fun chatting this time around, and I'm glad I had brought a short excerpt to read (I had a feeling we'd want extra time to chat, and it worked out well because we also had time for call-ins, and the callers were terrific). But the host likes nice long readings that listeners can get immersed in, so I'll be reading a complete short story this next time. Will post here as soon as there's a date set.

Nick, glad to hear that the screenplay is done. Don't forget that alot of the moviemaking is being done right up here in Canada. So if you have any say about where it should be shot, well.....

Re: Triad is Done!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Nick on 2/25/2004, 12:21 am, in reply to "Re: Triad is Done!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

It would be a great location, because the setting is a isolated mountain valley. :) I once saw a valley in Colorado that looked JUST like I envisioned it, but it was filled with houses and a whole city, so no use filming there :P Writers barely even have say about what words they write stay in the finish product, so no real hope of picking location. Sorry.

Locations

Posted by Terry on 2/25/2004, 7:57 am, in reply to "Re: Triad is Done!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Speaking of Canada and locations, I thought that Prince Edward Island was the most storybook-looking, fairy-tale place I'd ever seen. Such a gentle, enchanted place.

I will post as soon as I have a publication date! And I'll get a new site contest going as soon as I think up a decent challenge question. :)

My first car was a VW Rabbit in dark brown. I called it the Turdmobile. We got it used, so I didn't have a lot of choice in the color. The burning, cosmic question was: Why would they ever paint a new car that color in the first place?? :)

Can you drive sooner, with a learner's permit?

Re: guess what...........

Posted by Angi-Kate on 3/2/2004, 9:40 pm, in reply to "Re: guess what..........."

Didn't they change the laws so that even if you've got your license, it's a limited license until you're 18? My sister finished drivers ed last year and was really upset about it, but I'm not exactly sure how it works.

Re: guess what...........

Posted by Carlee on 3/4/2004, 9:39 pm, in reply to "Re: guess what..........."

here in Michigan you can take drivers ed I when you are 14 and 9 months. and then after you take the 24 hours of class you get a permit to drive with a parent. Then you have to wait 6th months after you get your permit from Sec. of State. and drive 50 hours (at lease 10 at night) and take segement 2 before you can get your licence. After you get your licence at 16 you have a 12:00 am curfew untill you are seventeen.

Now they are trying to pass a law stating that if a minor is driving only one other minor can be in the car. That means that when I can drive by my self the only passanger I can have is my sister. I think that it is stupid becuase I was planning to join a car pool.

~*Carlee*~

Driving laws (longish post)

Posted by Angi-Kate on 3/6/2004, 12:00 pm, in reply to "Re: guess what..........."

I agree with you that it is a bad law, especially for mature teenagers who take driving seriously. Unfortunately, and you've probably seen this on the news from WA recently, many teenagers try stupid stunts when they're with their friends. Two teenage girls decided to try and jump the highest, steepest hill in Spokane with their car a few weeks ago, had a third girl video taping the entire thing, and they ended up wrapping the car around a telephone pole. The passenger died, and the driver, because she is 18, will be charged with manslaughter. The video-girl is facing charges as well. One or two stupid stunts like this ruins things for the good drivers. WA law, according to my sister, now states that a driver under 18 (this age might change, I'm not sure) cannot drive with anyone other than a family member. I guess peer pressure causes accidents.

I'm glad there is more requirements to driver's ed now. At 15, we just had to go to class and drive with the instructor twice a week for half an hour until class was over and we could get our licenses at 16. We even took the written test in class.

Re: Demon Wars and Highwayman?

Posted by Angi-Kate on 3/1/2004, 4:55 pm, in reply to "Demon Wars and Highwayman?"

This book is a prequel to the Demon Wars Saga by R.A. Salvatore. Dave wants to create a book-giving holiday so that I'll get it for him. From what I understand, it is about one of the main characters before the epic battle begins, a kind of man-behind-the-hero story. Like if there were a book dedicated to Torrin before Illumination, hint-hint ^_^.

Just another Monday

Posted by Karin on 2/27/2004, 11:54 pm

I finally had a day off when the wind wasn't howling, no rain, not too cold, so I got in my boat and went exploring.

After hiking around a small mangrove island for a while, I headed home. Nothing interesting (to me) on that hike. Mostly driftwood and old lobster trap floats.

As I was approaching the north end of No Name Key, close to home, I spotted a pod of dolpins jumping and playing. There were probably about eight of them. Some were babies.

I stopped the boat, and they swam all around me.

Sometimes Mondays aren't so bad.

Oscars

YAY! LOTR SWEEPS!!!!!! I am soooo happy. You know what this means??? More, much more, money will be spent on fantasy movies in the next few years :) Hopefully we will start to see more good ones and not the chincy FX pics that line the videostore shelves. (Don't see "Darkest Knight" It is horrible.) I think Dragonlance is in development and might turn out to be good. Formerly, studios were scared to put money in fantasy films, but now watch the high budget pics roll out ;) (good news for my screenplay)

Isn't it Great about LOTR! I hope your'e right about more money being spent on Fantasy/Science Fiction movies. There are some books that I would love to see turned into films, Terry's Eiden Myr trilogy among them. My other favorite would be C.J. Cherryh's "Downbelow Station".

I felt absolutely *triumphant* on behalf of the fantasy genre when LOTR swept its categories. I was riveted to the awards throughout, when I usually watch a few minutes and get bored and wander away. It helped that it was a terrific ceremony overall, very entertaining.

And I thought of you, Nick, every time Scarlett Johansson was onscreen. *g* You're right, she is quite gorgeous. Also very self-possessed, which impressed me.

Still waiting to see the passion and Yes, Jennifer Garner (my former first, and now my second, favorite woman in Hollywood) was BEAUTIFUL that night. I would love for her to play my leading lady. Look for her soon in "Elektra", Directed by the man who directed another good fantasy movie, Reign of Fire. For those who don't know, Elektra is the "sequel" to Daredevil, or maybe spinoff is a better word. Daredevil 2 is in development and will shoot after Elektra. (I love having access to the trades) And no, Elektra did NOT die in Daredevil LOL.

Oooh, good question! I've only got a couple of Eiden Myr characters cast in my head (for fun, of course), and I haven't seen Scarlett in any films yet, only at the Oscars. I'll have to think about this one! Dabrena comes to mind, but it doesn't seem quite right. Must muse further.

The Movie Biz

Posted by Nick on 3/3/2004, 12:38 am

I've found a few disturbing things since starting film school. The worst part is the way they treat writers. Usually, the second a screenplay (or in Terry's case if luck is with her, an option) is sold the writer losses all control of what happens next. Most of the time, more writers are brought in to embellish or rewrite (in Terry's case a screenplay would have to be writen from scratch based on her novel) and the original writer has little to no say about how it is rewritten. Sometimes (not very often) the original writer doesn't even get screen credit. All you have to do is look at Steven King's early movies to see how much a story can change from page to screen. Compare the book and movie versions of Christine and The Shining. Most people think The Shining was one of the scariest movies of its time. But it had nothing on the book, which is still the only novel to physically scare me. I think the movie was boring. Anyway, I digress. I say all this to point out that all our discussions about locations and actors who would play in our films is fun, but completely unrealistic. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't LOVE Jennifer G. or Scarlett J. to play the female part (sorry there is only one major female in my script, that's just how it worked out) in my script.

Quite right Nick, however, there have been exceptions to this Hollywood rule. Point in fact, Anne Rice and the original Interview With a Vampire movie. Not only did Ms Rice have creative input, she also held some control. It is nice to believe that a system can be made to back down when IT IS WRONG. Writers, be it screenplay or novelists, should definitely have input into the work that people will associate with them.
By the way Terry, writers should also have a say as to the publishing date.....LOL

LOL, Robert! If only!

Fortunately for me, my publisher hasn't scheduled either of my books at a "bad" time. I trust Tor to find the most advantageous slot for each book.

But if I did have a say in scheduling Triad, it would of course be out in the next couple of weeks. *g*

Re: The Movie Biz (somewhat long post)

Oh, definitely--musing on actors and locations is an enjoyable pastime. But one you probably have to be extra careful of when you're actually working in the film business. You can't set your heart on things.

Also, actors are actors. Someone who seems to fit a part physically or personality-wise might not be the best fit for the part. Someone else could completely surprise you--because becoming a character is what actors do, and at its best it's a magical transformation.

We had a screenwriter as the keynote speaker at the Los Angeles Nebula Awards(R) a couple of years ago, and his story was a sobering one. It's a tough business, and very different from book publishing (which can be grueling, but in other ways).

I have to find a link to the interview in which an author was asked, about the movie version of his novel, "What do you think about what they did to your book??" (The tone implying that they made a hash of it.) He took a copy of his book off the shelf, turned it over in his hands, and said, "Hmm, looks okay to me." :) Film versions of novels may fail to do them justice, but at least the original isn't compromised. Alas, the same isn't true for screenplays, except in that you can preserve your own original as an archive copy.

BTW, I feel exactly the way you do about the film and book versions of The Shining. The book actually scared me, one of the few books that have. (Jonathan Carroll's Voice of Our Shadow is another one, and Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House. And one moment in Thomas Harris's Red Dragon actually made me jump in surprise, which I thought was an extraordinary achievement for a prose work.) The movie was completely uninteresting.

Re: The Movie Biz (somewhat long post)

Posted by Robert on 3/5/2004, 1:14 pm, in reply to "Re: The Movie Biz (somewhat long post)"

I agree with you Terry, the writer who can make you jump or squirm in your seat as you read is more of an artist than the FX guy on a movie set. Scaring people or surprising them physically or intellectually with the use of the written word is a most difficult thing to achieve.
Terry, you achieved this in both Illuminations and The Binders Road. Sometimes the prose was so captivating that I felt almost physically pulled in by the description of an event or place.
A couple of weeks to wait for Triad would be bearable "g"...

Tks :)

I agree, as in, the books were so powerful when I read them that there were parts in which I could not stay sitting down. There were characters I yelled at and characters I cheered for, especially when the Louarn/Mellas/Flin memories became one. That was my favorite part! ^_^

More tks! :)

When I was reading Illumination I would have to stop reading for just a sec and think about it becuase when Liath was confused about everything that Torrin was saying so was I. I was expecting a clear good guy vs. bad guy thing where I learn the lines at the beginning, and when the lines were switched I felt Like she did.

That was really cool in my opinion, because the lines between good and evil are never solid or clear cut. I never imagined that teaching people to read and write would be a bad thing, but in this world, it was close to sacralige (pardon the spelling). I've heard people complain that Illumination is a "thinking book," but that's what I like about it. It was fun to think about things throughout the story, and become even more invested in Liath's confusion and progress.

Next time you see someone staring at your necklace, stare at their cross with a disapproving look. It's basically the same thing. The pentagram is a holy symbol like the cross or the star of david or the crecent moon. You can tell people its a symbol of protection and it represents the five elements. I get upset when people don't treat Wicca/paganism as a religion just as valid as Christianity, Judaism, or Islam. In fact, it pisses me off. Where do these people live so I can egg their houses... (just kidding)

TY... you are really sweet. :) I'm glad I could help. If you follow my posts, you'll notice I'm a bit strange... I advocated the viewing of Passion of the Christ, but I am not christian. LOL Anyway, I am of a religion/philosophy called Thelema. Look it up. It basically says that everyone has their own path or "Will" and no one EVER has the right to block another's path, but you should always work to find your true Will and follow it to the best of your ability. If everyone in the world did that, there would be true peace and no conflict of any kind. I hope by looking into Thelema, you can find your true path. "Do what thou Wilt shall be the whole of the Law. Love is the Law, Love under Will."

Nick,
I looked up Thelema on the Internet. Very interesting, it follows some of my own beliefs. I tend to incorporate what makes sense to me from different conventional religions and other alternative religions/philosophies and make them part of my own belief system. I guess you would say that I'm following my own path.

hey guys! a thread on religon. cool.

So, I havent looked anything up yet but does Thelema and walking your own path suggest that we all have a fate or we decide what will happen to us on our own?

As for my religon, I am a full christian and I believe that everyone has a fate determined by God Before we are even born, but we do have free will.

I think that its awesome that we can talk about all of this with out breaking into an all out fight. :)

Take away the W. And the black and white and red all over could be anything. A newspaper, a spider with a nose bleed, a sunburned zebra. If you babysit, ask that question and refuse to give the 'correct' answer and see how many creative things the kids will come up with. What has many eyes, but never cries?

Which actress would you pick to play the part of Liath?
Jennifer Garner (Votes: 0)
Scarlett Johansson (Votes: 1)
Liv Tyler (Votes: 2)
Anna Paquin (Votes: 0)
Christina Ricci (Votes: 1)
Kate Hudson (Votes: 0)
Angelina Jolie (Votes: 0)
Jolene Blalock (Votes: 0)
Kirsten Dunst (Votes: 0)

If I could give any advice regarding retainers it would be to make sure you wear them as long or longer than the orthodontist (sp?) tells you to. I should have been completely done with them last year, but I decided I didn't need to wear them and my teeth moved and they had to give me three new sets to move them back again. I'll be wearing these things til I'm thirty! Oh! And NEVER wrap them in a napkin at lunch! Can't tell you how easy it is to lose them that way.

I did pick Scarlett though, cause I gotta be loyal. :) I think Christina Ricci would play the Seeker girl (darn, I forgot her name and I left my copy of Illumination in the car). Angelina Jolie I can see as one of the scheming Ennead girls. :)

I voted Other, too, because I agree that a newcomer might be best for Liath. But I love hearing everyone's take on it! You picked a great list of actors, too.

We'll find roles for Orlando and Scarlett somehow! :)

This week I had a lot of substitute teachers too. One in Adv. Algebra, Bio, and english, and one day in band the interns took over, that leaves only one class in which i didnt have a sub. scary!

Orlando and Scarlett can be students in the holding. Of course, I can almost see Orlando playing Louarn. Then he'd be on screen longer..

Binder's Road--Louarn/Mellas/Flin. Of course, he wouldn't get to play all three characters, but they'd hafta get two cute guys who look like younger versions of Orlando. In the case of Mellas, he could play that character, then makeup guys can olden-him-up to play Louarn.

Wasn't Mellas like 12 years old? Orlando may be "cute" but he don't look that young LOL

lol ..yeah ..they'd need some cute lil boy to play ..i can't think of any ...because i don't look a the lil boys ..only the big ones ..hehehe ..i gotta look in my book again to see who Flin and that L one is ...for some reason does't ring a bell

Nick is right. Mellas is 5 years younger than Liath. So in Illumination, Liath is 18 which makes Mellas 13.
Look at the dates in the Chronology on this website. It doesn't mention Mellas by name, but remember, he is the son of Evonder and Lerissa.

Re: What If?

Posted by Terry on 3/23/2004, 7:44 pm, in reply to "Re: What If?"

{smiling at the detective work!}

Yeah, I think it might be stretching a bit for Orlando to play Mellas, given the age, but Louarn requires a strikingly attractive actor, and Orlando fits the bill.

I also really like Angi-Kate's idea of having Orlando and Scarlett be vocates in the Holding. Hmm, maybe Tolivar and Dabrena? Scarlett's not quite petite enough to be Dabrena, but the physical match doesn't have to be perfect, and she certainly can sell strength under a youthful sweetness. And if we had Orlando playing a supporting role like that, imagine the megasuperstars we'd get for the leading roles. :)

Was it Karin who mentioned Johnny Depp once in another thread? I think he'd make a pretty darn cool Louarn. Who else would be good? I love hearing these suggestions.

I think Clancy Brown would make a good "Heff".
I didn't realize he had played "Viktor" in the 1985 movie, "The Bride". "The Bride" is a take-off on the Frankenstein story. He also played in "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across the 8th Dimension", "Highlander", "The Shawshank Redemption", "Starship Troopers" and the TV series "Earth 2".

A dream that I had.... (long post!)

Posted by Carlee on 3/16/2004, 5:51 pm

okay, I had a dream last night about Illumination. So I was standing on this dirt road when this girl walks up. I Decide that I want to walk with her. She introduces herself as Liath and we walk a little longer just chit chatting. and then she explains her confusions about the Ennead ect. and we talk about that for a while becuase I am in the same state of confusion. And then these two guys come walking up, one is Torrin and the other is Orlando Bloom (he's in all my dreams!) and then we all sit down for a nice Picnic in a wooded area next to a stream and talk. Then I we are attacked by Orgers... THis is were the dream turns into another book, Ella Enchanted (due out in Movie version soon) and Torrin and Orlando fight to save us all. and then we go into the whole Ella Enchanted story line and I wake living happily ever after. The end.

i just thought that I would share this dream since it is kinda cool to dream about books.

So, as I was saying Ella enchanted is coming out in theaters soon, and I think that everyone should read the book and go see the movie. i love the book so much I think that I have read it 8 times already, so if they screw the movie up I will be mad. Anyways its awesome!

I love Ella Enchanted as well, the book club at Auntie's is reading it and then we're going to take the kids to the movie. One major difference between the two is that there was no real threat in the book, Ella just *thought* that she could be used to ruin the kingdom because of her curse, but they make it an actual plot in the movie. It gives a good reason for Carey Elwes to be in it, he plays the bad guy! *o* Kissies *o*

Religion/Thelema (from previous post)

Posted by Nick on 3/16/2004, 10:32 pm

I thought this merited its own post since religious discussions always get out of hand. hehe. :) Thelema DOES infer that everyone has their own destiny. Of course there is free will. That is why we all get in trouble so much. The duty of a Thelemite is to follow their own path and steer others toward their own paths as well. This is not to be confused with preaching (I hate people who try to force their religions on others -- like a certain president who shall remain annonymous if not, hopefully, in power). A Thelemite should merely help those who are having problems reevaluate their lives and discover for themselves what it is they are doing wrong. As for the afterlife. I personally believe in reincarnation and the gradual purifiying of the soul. When a soul becomes enlightened to a certain extent, it becomes one with God and does not return to earth. This I got from Qabbalah, which I have studied on and off for many years, and which is also a part of Thelema. You might find more information on Thelema if you search for its founder: Aliester Crowley (waiting for the chorus of hisses from the christians who think Crowley was evil) or the Ordo Templi Orientis, which was the original Thelemic church/Order

Re: Religion/Thelema (from previous post)

Posted by Angi-Kate on 3/17/2004, 3:52 am, in reply to "Religion/Thelema (from previous post)"

That sounds really cool! I've never heard of Thelema before, so I'll hafta look up more information. The only thing I can see Christians getting upset about is that it looks like Christ is taken out of the equasion. Reincarnation is something that I believe in as well, though I've never quite thought of it as purification of the soul, that makes a lot of sense. In this current life, I'm a white female in America, next time, I could be any different race or gender in any country. I believe that this information is stored within my soul so that my soul can learn to understand the world and the world of spirits from many different angles. I don't belive that God would create a large world with so many possibilities for his creations to be narrow-minded, especially when He seems to put so much emphasis on flesh not being the most important part of existance. I think the same goes for churches, each one has something to share and no single one is perfect. That's just my thought...

Re: Religion/Thelema (from previous post)

Posted by Nick on 3/17/2004, 1:53 pm, in reply to "Re: Religion/Thelema (from previous post)"

The reason why I meantioned Christians being upset is that Aliester Crowley was notorious in the late 19th century/early 20th for being completely anti-christian. He styled himself the Beast 666 because his christian parents were overbearing and thought him a wicked child. There is a Black Sabbath song about him ("Mr. Crowley"). Crowley was such a "bad" person he was banished from much of Europe (he's origianlly from England) and spent his last years as a recluse. Thelema came from an experience he had in 1904 in Egypt when he did a ritual to call on his Holy Guardian Angel. The being that supposedly spoke to him through his wife laid down the Law, which is now written word for word in "The Book of the Law" which is equivalent to the first books of the bible for Thelemites.

Whoa ...deep stuff there ...I've never heard of Crowley ..so i don't hiss at him ..well atleast i dun think ?? ...I would beat any parents who called their child wicked ...but ppl are dumb, can't save them ...Reincarnation, thats pretty cool, i don't yet really have a belief for that yet, i've read stories about ppl having memories about their past life, but i'm not sure about it myself, i believe if you are to be reincarnated those who are worthy should be able IF THEY WISH ...But thats me, Thelemites have a bible?? Hmmm... Wicca just has a simple statement "Do what thou wilt, an it harm none." ...Oh yeah ..i'm going to hurt my dad, he picked my out this cool book, until i got to one point and it totally dissed my religion ...i believe he got it for me so he could convert me back lol ....but it angered my when i read it, wanted to throw it across the room ..well maybe not that bad ...but still ..oh yeah, trying to learn to write it Runes :D

Re: Religion/Thelema (from previous post)

Posted by Angi-Kate on 3/20/2004, 12:11 pm, in reply to "Re: Religion/Thelema (from previous post)"

I didn't mean to offend, I was inferring my own half baked info. Lia, parents always want the best for their children, even if the parent's definition is different than the child's. My parents bought me a book when Dave and I first planned to get married, "Avoiding Mr. Wrong." They said, "We just don't want you to make such a drastic mistake, honey." I read the book, hated their purpose for giving it to me, but it only cemented the reasons why I want to marry Dave. Think of the book as a different view of examining faith. I had the opportunity to work with a Wiccan Priestess and she was really open about answering my questions. Before meeting her, I wasn't sure what to make of that faith, and probably would have been on your dad's side. Learning is fun. That's really cool that you're learning to write runes. Are you going to make your own stones?

Just out of curiosity, when you were writing your friends' names in runes, did they relate it to LOTR? (About the stones, I have a bag of runestones that someone made out of clay, and they look really cool, but I don't know who lost them.)

Hey people, you're absent from the board for two weeks and you have dozens of posts to read through. Glad to see that many more regular denizens of the board have added themselves. Oh, my goodness, Carmel, I'm so envious of you for getting to pet a Florida panther! How did it feel? Was its coat rougher than you'd expect? If you have a digital version of the photo your husband took and you want it posted, let me know. :)

Welcome back. I find it's easiest to stay caught up if I check in here right after I check my email.

Great idea, I never get to the emails...have to fight the wife for access to this computer. And the office has installed a filter which has DECLARED this site restricted due to mature content...LOL the government (my employer) is really sensitive about the word fantasy.

Oh, wow, Robert, really? I'm quite taken aback by that filter, but I suppose "fantasy" is a keyword for sites with very different content. That's troubling. I'm going to look at the keywords for the main page and see if I can think of a workaround that still conveys the genre. I appreciate the information!
